We were lucky to catch up with Brea Holmes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brea, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
It’s something I’m still working on. I’m a very low key person, and the industry that I am in is full of HUGE personalities. The mindset that helps me get out of the “Imposter Syndrome” spiral is that: “If I wasn’t supposed to be here, God wouldn’t have put me here”. I am a firm believer that God has put me in rooms where I needed to be as well as my skill set.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Brea Holmes, and I am a Costume Designer in the entertainment industry. I have made costumes from theater to features, and for companies like Disney Plus and Marvel.
My most recent project that is out is “Project CC” on Disney Plus directed by Cashmere Jasmine, which is a part of the Launchpad Series.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would have to say that my three qualities/skills that I have developed in my career are:
1) My Problem-solving Skills: Problems arise! It’s a part of the territory. I have gotten quick when it comes to coming up with solutions on the fly. I believe this is one of my greatest strengths.
2) My knowledge working on different mediums: One of the things I wanted to achieve in my career is to be the “Jack-of-all-trades”. I wanted to design on different mediums so I would know the demand and what I would need. I have yet to design a video game but that’s the only thing left on my list.
3) My Curiosity about learning: Every project is different. I love creating new characters, learning about time periods, occupations, etc. More or less “Creating people” is always a fun process for me.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Every person that I have assisted, every project that I have designed, every artist that I have collaborated with have been the most helpful in my career. Everything and everyone that I have come into contact with have helped me to build and develop the skills that I have today.
