We were lucky to catch up with Brendan Duffey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brendan, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic stems from my personal drive and fascination with music and audio. I know success comes only with discipline and attention to detail. Ultimately, my love for creating and perfecting music drives me to put in the hours and effort needed to ensure every project reaches its full potential.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a Grammy award-winning mixing and mastering engineer who has worked with everyone from Bruce Dickinson to Milton Nascimento and Kendrick Lamar. In my work, I aim to push the creative and sonic envelope to deliver unique and powerful listening experiences, always to take music to its full potential. I recently opened a new purpose-built mixing and mastering studio in Jupiter, Florida. The studio was created to offer private and serene creative space away from the hustle and bustle of the main industry hubs.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
People skills, hard work, and a collaborative spirit are what you need to progress in the industry. Not being a jerk, being empathetic and a good hang is a must. Work as well and as hard as you can. Welcome and respect the experience, opinions, and insight of those in the same project or path as you. Honing these skills over time will solidify your personal and professional network, provide stability, and grow your insight into the types of people, projects, and places you want to work.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My friends, family, and colleagues provide great examples of what can and should be done, but in the end, I am the one who does the work to improve and progress. I think of it as a marathon in that the other runners can provide examples or motivation, but in the end, my level of performance and where I place are solely up to me. I can attribute a lot of my success to the motivation, resources, and examples that my close network provides me.
