We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bri Aspen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bri below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Bri with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I developed my work ethic through sports, specifically golf, which I played at the collegiate level. Golf taught me discipline, patience, and the importance of consistent practice—skills that directly translate to how I approach everything I do. As a musician now, I apply that same mindset to rehearsing, collaborating, and continually improving. The drive to push myself and stay focused, even when it doesn’t feel like it is paying off, really comes from those early athletic experiences.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a singer-songwriter based in Nashville, TN—but I like to say I’m not your typical Nashville artist. While the city is known for its strong country roots, I bring something different to the table: a blend of pop and soul. My sound is driven by emotional storytelling, smooth melodies, and rich vocals that pull from influences like Adele, Lauryn Hill, and Stevie Nicks. I’m carving out space for a different kind of voice in Music City—writing songs just as heartfelt, but adding a more contemporary, soulful edge.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Authenticity in Artistry
One of the most impactful qualities in my journey has been learning to lean into who I really am—musically and personally. In a city where country music dominates, choosing to stay true to my sound has set me apart. Intentionally defining myself as a person and artist, and refusing to veer from that, gives me a crucial perspective in this industry.
My Advice: Don’t chase trends or try to fit into a mold that isn’t yours. The more honest you are in your music, the more deeply it will resonate with the right audience. It takes courage, but it pays off.
2. Consistency & Discipline
Talent is important, but it’s consistency that builds momentum. From writing regularly, posting on socials, to rehearsing and showing up for gigs (even the small ones), discipline has been a game-changer.
My Advice: Treat your art like a job—even before it’s your job. Set a routine, keep creating, and show up for yourself whether people are paying attention yet or not.
3. Community & Collaboration
Building genuine relationships in the music community has opened doors I couldn’t have walked through alone. Co-writes, live shows, and honest feedback from other artists have shaped me in ways I never expected.
My Advice: Don’t take this journey alone. Go to local shows, support fellow artists, and be open to learning from others. The music industry can be hard, but a solid creative community makes it a lot more meaningful.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
I was raised in a home where empathy was everything. My parents made it a point to teach me how to really listen—to understand people’s emotions, perspectives, and struggles without judgment. Whether it was through conversations at the dinner table or the way they treated others, I saw firsthand the power of compassion and perspective.
That kind of upbringing has deeply shaped my career as a songwriter. Empathy is at the core of every lyric I write. It helps me tap into not just my own experiences, but the emotions of others—whether I’m telling my story or giving voice to someone else’s. It allows me to connect with listeners on a human level, creating songs that feel personal even to people I’ve never met.
