Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brian Andrew Whiteley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brian Andrew, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I stopped listening to other people and started listening to myself. If you are not on your own journey then you are on someone else’s. I write down/ideate on what I want to do and then I do it. I may mess up a few times but eventually I get it right. I learn from my mistakes, make adjustments and continue forward. Sometimes I look back and realize what I thought was a mistake was a success. I take advocates along with me and keep telling others to buzz off. I keep pushing forward. I never compromise myself (this gets harder the bigger you get).
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Generic terminology would describe me as “a visual artist and curator based in New York City.” However, if I were to describe myself I would say that I am a bizarre, provocative, multi-disciplinary creative with an art practice and exhibition platform.
My personal art practice has garnered press world wide and has seen Justin Bieber sue me and has placed me on a Secret Service Watch List for making a tombstone for Donald Trump. I started a creepy clown pandemic and caused mayhem as Bigfoot in Brooklyn. I’ve shown my art at major museums, art institutions, art fairs and galleries. My larger projects combine performance, installation, video and music in a theatrical blend.
The art fair I founded entitled SATELLITE is held during Miami Art Basel and purposefully the fair that is #notbasel. We are installation and performance forward with a growing commercial component. We are always trying to find low-cost solutions for our community to exhibit and connecting them to the collector, curator and museum board. We have launched numerous artists into the higher echelons of the art world. Without a platform like SATELLITE a lot of experimental voices would be lost.
I believe great art is for the masses and provides a visual rhythm to our life. I believe that art interjected on an unsuspecting audience has the power to create a sense of profoundness. I think that not everyone is an artist and bad art should be called out and thrown away.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. listen to your intuitions. This crosses many arenas, but the basics are true. If something doesn’t feel right – a relationship, a business partner, a loan or contract. JUST STOP.
2. Say No. Your time is precious and limited. You must use it to your advantage. If something is taking away from your journey or not contributing to your journey you must say NO.
3, Say Yes & Commit. If you’ve found something (idea, proposal, partner, concept, style etc.) that will benefit you on your journey then grab on to it and commit (work) and always listen to your intuition as you go.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for people to come on board for SATELLITE Art Fair. We are a large community of creatives and love to collaborate. We have rolling work opportunities and are always looking for people to exhibit and perform with us. We are currently scouting for folks who like to do marketing, exhibitor outreach, festival development and sponsorship. Please have a look at our website and let us know if you are a fit. We are also open to people who are self motivated and want to take on a new aspect of the event.
