We recently connected with Brian Blindauer and have shared our conversation below.
Brian, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
The best way I’ve found is seeing beautiful places on social media or in books. I’ve found when I see these beautiful places I have a drive to want to photograph them and capture the beauty I saw. If I see a location that speaks to me I will do my best to make it there to photograph it and create my own personal vision of the area. Social media can be good and bad and one of the good things is inspiring more creatives.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I primarily am a landscape photographer. I enjoy traveling and visiting amazing and beautiful places. About 8 years ago I started to photograph landscapes and just put all my effort into it. All the effort paid off because I started to see improvement. I then started solo traveling to different states and today I still solo travel, but also lead groups to different areas to share the beauty I have seen with them. It’s been an amazing journey and the next move is to start traveling internationally which will begin next year with two trips to Costa Rica and Iceland. I continue to try to improvement my art by adding other forms such as video and am excited for what the future holds.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important things I think you need to pursue landscape photography is an unstoppable drive, understanding of light and how it works, and also understanding composition. The drive will help you constantly improve and start to develop your art and vision. When I first started falling in love with photography I was out taking pictures every week. Making mistakes and improving on my style and vision. All that time shaped my photography into what it is today and helps me tackle any area I need to photograph. The second thing I think people need to learn is how light works. Light is the essence of any photograph. Studying and learning how light reacts will help you be able to capture a scene more effectively. And lastly once you have learned about light then it would be best to focus on composition and how to arrange a scene. This really makes an image flow and makes it appealing to the eyes. Always learn the light first cause a great composition needs an understanding of light too.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents used to take me into nature and helped me grow a love for the outdoors. I was already out in nature exploring beautiful places and getting a camera to photograph them was so natural. I don’t know if I would be here if they didn’t take me out to see these beautiful places when I was young.
