Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brian Elder. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Brian, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I went through depression and anxiety in 2019 and found myself crying out to the Lord to get me through it and to give me purpose. And He did.
Prior to that, I played music at a younger age and it was all I wanted to do. After many years of playing, I gave it up and didn’t want anything to do with it anymore. I had no desire to really pursue anything with music. During that season when I was going through depression and anxiety, I felt that the Holy Spirit led me to pick up my guitar and start playing again. So I did. I started writing music again, but this time it was music about the Lord and for healing of what I was going through.
It wasn’t an over night process. It took a while to get through that season in my life. But I started seeking God and reading His Word and talking to Him. Slowly He was preparing me for what was next. I tried to stay focused on God and continued writing music to get me through the depression and writing whatever God led me to write.
A couple years later, I got a call for an interview to be a performer at a theme park. I knew I was being led by God, so by faith, I accepted the job and I drove across the country two weeks later. From there, I went to Florida to play in prisons and share my testimonies of how God was leading me. Then I came back to Virginia and started playing churches, met my wife, got married, and we now have a baby on the way. I am currently in the studio recording new music, and playing shows and other events that God opens for me to do. I recently took a position as a worship leader at a new church starting this fall. I love playing music so much more than I ever did before, because now I play to glorify God and to be able to share my testimonies and what I went through. That gives me more joy doing it.
Seeking God and His will is what I did. I surrendered my life to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He leads me and I try to be obedient and be a vessel. If He can take a nobody like me and put me in places to share my testimony and music, He can do that with anyone He calls as long as we surrender our life to Him.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a singer / songwriter with music that ranges across multiple genres from Christian Rock to Country. I am currently playing at churches that have me come in as a guest speaker to share my music and testimonies. I am currently in the studio recording new music. I recently accepted a lead worship position. I’m married and my wife and I have a baby on the way. I love Jesus and I am trying to live my life for Him and trying to love others and help where I can.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Qualities I think are great to have is be humble and help others when you can. It will never hurt to help someone else out. Keep your eyes focused on God. And someone told me once that you need three types of people in your life. Those that are mentoring you, those you walk beside as your colleagues and those that you mentor.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always interested in collaborating with other songwriters.
