Meet Brian Elder

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brian Elder. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brian below.

Brian, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

Being a songwriter, I write about what I’m feeling or going through. That can help get it out. And if you don’t write music, you can also journal what you’re feeling. Spending time with Jesus and telling Him how I feel is helpful a lot of times. Knowing that I’m not alone and that I’m not the only one going through depression helps tremendously. When you think you’re the only one struggling, it keeps you in bondage by not wanting to talk about it or share it with others. Often times we don’t want to talk about it out of fear of being judged or looked at differently. But when you open up about how you feel and what you are going through, it can not only break the stronghold on you, but can also help others that may be going through the same thing. When we read the Bible, we can see that King David and Elijah both suffered at times with depression. In the Psalms, King David says how he feels and he acknowledges it but then he always comes back to saying things like, But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying “You are my God!” (Psalms 31:14). Trusting the Lord and surrendering it to Him is helpful cause we are not meant to carry that burden. Those are some of the ways that help me through hard times and struggles.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My name is Brian Elder. I’m a Christian artist and songwriter. I play a variety of events (festivals, churches, concerts, camps, fairs, youth events, coffee shops, prisons, etc), sharing my music and testimonies of what God has done in my life and how He has led me in different ways. I also speak on depression and anxiety to help encourage others that may be going through the same thing, or struggling in other ways. I love that I can share my music and experiences to help others. If there are events that you would like me to come play or speak at, you can contact me on my website through the contact page.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I think three of the skills, qualities, or areas of knowledge that are helpful in my journey are vulnerability, knowing how to play music, and being able to edit videos. If you are writing songs about your own life or talking about it, you have to be vulnerable to some degree. I edit a lot of my own videos to make short clips to share so that’s why video editing has been helpful in the times of social media and having an online presence.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am always looking for others to partner or collaborate with. I love co-writing music with other songwriters, and playing events with other artists. I’m also open to a booking agent, management team, or others that do marketing in this field. And if there is a specific venue, event, or church that you would like me to share at, send me a message. You can connect with me through my website contact page. I’d love to hear from you if you’d like to partner or collaborate.
