Meet Brian Johnson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brian Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Brian, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

What I do is, take a idea that may already be out there and put a new angle to it… a new story to a existing idea.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am an Independent Filmmaker that would like to show people my strange view of the world. When I make a project, on the surface there is a unique story, but underneath it all is a angle that maybe no one has looked at before. So, I hope that people can see what I am trying to show and hear what I am trying to say… I believe that the importance of documenary filmmaking is to be truly nuetral. Let the participants in the film tell the story. The exciting part of filmmaking is when you realize that you are standing in ankle deep water and what you need to do is go deeper, where it could get dangerous. Some people have described my work by saying that they are not sure if what they are watching is fiction or real, I like that.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Over the past 30 years production formats have changed several times. For an artist, who is not a technical person, this is a challenge because instead of concentrating on your creative project, you now have to learn how to use a new technical format. So, over the years I have done my best to stick to my art while examining the new technology involved in the latest projects out there. Don’t wait until you get the right equipment, equipment does not make films, filmmakers make films.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

In Los Angeles it is not easy to find people to voluntarilly work on your project. Everyone in L.A. has their own vision of what they want to do in the Art and Entertainment world, so getting them to be excited about your artistic project is tough. They dont see your vision and are not willing to commit to it. Collaborating with other Hollywood people is a struggle, because one man does not make a mountain, but one man and a group of unmotivated lazy people does not make a mountain either. Back in the day, I used to play in Rock n Roll Bands and performed and recorded original songs. I still get out and live the Rock n Roll life at times. Its like living an adventure with filming and also performing live.
