Meet Brian Lange

We were lucky to catch up with Brian Lange recently and have shared our conversation below.

Brian, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Well it certainly waivers week to week or month to month, but I try to stay true to my sonic taste and use that as my North Star. I honestly don’t know what I’m doing so I try to lean on people I trust and admire to help guide me, all while listening to my gut instict. I try not to be afraid of making mistakes and give myself ample time without too much pressure to experiment and discover new things.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I have been a full time working drummer for most of my adult life. So when Covid took away all the gig opportunities in 2020 that’s when Fazeone studio was born. People often told me that they were fond of my sound and the way I tune my drums so I decided to make that available remotely via a recording setup. I quickly learned that once you have all the necessary tools to record a drum set properly, you have all the tools to record pretty much anything. That began my journey as a studio owner and engineer. Since then I have had the incredible pleasure of working with close friends and meeting lots of new people, all graciously trusting me with the task of capturing and helping to create their art. I found a new passion and fell in love with combining analog recording equipment (particularly reel to reel tape machines and outboard gear) as well as digital “in the box” software. I have always let me taste be my guide even if I don’t understand quite how to achieve something; I know what I’m after so my journey has been full of trials and errors. For me that is truly the best way to learn something new.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The last 5 years have been a crash course in learning how to approach different clients in all different kinds of situations. Being able to guide a room and assert yourself (or not) has been much more important than I realized.

My ability to move, work and troubleshoot quickly yet calmly and with purpose has certainly been tested and improved over time. This is especially important when the client is paying by the hour.

I have also been taught by my life partner how to create space for mental and physical rest. Even though I love my work and could do it even second of every day it is important to leave space for myself and others outside of work. That line is especially blurry when many of my clients and coworkers are my closest friends.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

Omar Garcia of Browner Sound has been an incredible ally and mentor to me. He is a very skilled technician who fixes tons of analog music equipment and also builds custom gear which I have filled my studio with over the years. He is kind and generous with his talent and knowledge, and makes a decent cup of coffee.

My friends, peers and clients who challenge and inspire me over and over again. I used to say that every session presents a new problem to solve (in a good way) and now I am happy to report that only every other session catches me off guard now! lol
