We recently connected with Brian Metcalf and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Does one truly overcome imposter syndrome? I have found the best way to overcome imposter syndrome is to do what it is you like to do and repeatedly do it over and over again. Eventually over time you start to realize that you might know a thing or two on what you’re talking about and people will come to you for advice.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I tend to do a variety of things, all basically in the creative/artistic fields. I work as a writer, director, producer, actor, musician and model. Sometimes doing just one duty for a job and other times doing it all.
As a writer, I write mainly screenplays both for TV and film. As a director, I typically direct the projects I write and same as a producer. As an actor, I tend to act in whatever I find interesting. Sometimes I take on all those roles for a single project if it fits.
As a musician, I tend to write and compose my own music using Logic Pro. I had just signed with Sony AWAL a year ago even though I had been dabbling in music for some time but this was definitely step forward for me.
As a model, it’s something I stumbled into when a designer asked if I would be interested in walking for his show a little over a year ago. Since then, I have walked for New York Fashion week twice and LA Fashion week three times. I am doing some more shows in New York and London coming up in February. I also just recently signed with EMG Models, a new agency, so I’m excited to see where that will take me.
I find that having a variety of different jobs that bring in multiple income streams is quite beneficial living in such an expensive city such as Los Angeles while also keeping life interesting.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I say that three major qualities/skills that have been essential in all my areas of work are the following:
Networking: Networking is very key in any profession. Having a solid networking group helps you to find other jobs, make new acquaintances, learn about certain jobs to avoid, find things to ask for, etc. I am always out there networking in order to help me in whatever job I do.
Persistence: This is very important as well to remind people that you still exist. The key is to be persistent without being annoying. People are busy so you just have to give them a nudge from time to time as a reminder.
Being Punctual: This may seem obvious or small but this is extremely important. It shows that you aren’t wasting someone’s time if you arrive early or on time. I have gotten jobs from people in the past just for showing up on time whereas the other person showed up late.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Whenever I have felt overwhelmed with either too much work or a daunting task in particular, I would feel stuck and procrastinate. I started to realize that procrastinating does nothing but draw out and exacerbate the problem mentally and sometimes physically. Over the years, I learned to solve the situation by breaking it down apart and tackling one small section at a time.
