Meet Brian Vu

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brian Vu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Brian, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
When I first started my career I didn’t see many faces like me within the photography community. I realized over time that this was the best way to carve out my own path. I believe standing out instead of trying to fit in with everyone worked.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I would consider myself a multimedia artist who works with photography, makeup artistry, 3D design, graphic design, and sometimes fashion. These all come back to skills I’ve learned connected to my first love of photography. I find the experimentation process within making art the most interesting part. It’s creative problem solving I can do on a daily basis. It allows my mind to transport me to another place.

At the moment i’m working on a beauty brand and then a new body of photography work after that. I’ve been in a period of drawing inspiration by watching films and listening to music. Just living life and taking it all in for what’s to come next.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe organization, communication, and compromise were essential to working within the industry. I was able to learn a lot of these skills while I was in art school. I then was able to apply them once I began working as an artist. I believe these skills get better over time. I think a commercial artist has to be actively self-aware when working with clients. It’s the best way for me to figure out my own needs while meeting theirs.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking to collaborate with other artists. That’s another reason why I love to make photography. My favorite people to collaborate with are people who are open-minded and have a strong sense of self. Sometimes we just go in blindly and see what comes out of the present moment. That unexpected moment can open doors to new ideas.
