We were lucky to catch up with Briana Pippen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Briana, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I’ve suffered from imposter syndrome for awhile. Although I’ve accomplished so much, I’ve always felt like I haven’t done enough so I’ve never celebrated my wins. I would always focus on how hard it was to achieve a goal, rather than celebrating the fact I’ve accomplished it and never quit despite the opposition. I’d gotten to the point where no matter how hard I worked or whatever I’ve accomplished just wasn’t enough. I’ve recently overcame imposter syndrome by first acknowledging that it was something I struggled with. I also began to affirm myself. I literally had to start telling myself over and over that I’m worthy to be celebrated and what I do is good enough because I once didn’t believe it. Faith without works is dead (James 2:17), so not only did I pray to be free from imposter syndrome, I began to add works to my faith. I now acknowledge and push myself to celebrate my accomplishments big or small, despite being uncomfortable. Overcoming imposter syndrome didn’t happen overnight, it was a one day one step at a time process for me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m Briana, creator of divineRootz. divineRootz is a Christian based natural hair care line that I started in 2016 in my parent’s kitchen. I was a hairstylist that had this grand idea to mix a whole bunch of oils together to use on my clients. What’s most exciting about having a natural hair care line that actually produces results, are the testimonials and reviews I receive. Being able to bring hope to the hopeless through hair products I’ve created is incredible! To be able to give results to people who were told their hair will never grow back leaves me speechless. Being able to see people get fast results is quite impressive lol. Most importantly, having thousands of people trust and believe in something I’ve created in my parents kitchen is, leaves me overwhelmed with joy.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities, skills and areas of knowledge that were most impactful during my entrepreneurial journey would be integrity, resilience and adaptability. Integrity, being honest and transparent my customers to gain their loyalty and trust. Resilience, being able to bounce back and keep moving forward despite any opposition. Adaptability, being able to adjust to change and not allowing it to affect me in a negative way. Best way to develop these qualities and skills is first, never think you’re too good to be a student, there’s so much to learn from others. Embrace every obstacle that comes your way, for it gives you a chance to grow. Be honest and determined. Always include God, seek His guidance and wisdom.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Entrepreneurship can be overwhelming, especially when you fill every position in your business. When I am overwhelmed, I pray, call my best friend Kamille lol, take a step back, and prioritize the most important task at the moment. I’ll normally give myself deadlines and write down strategies so that I’m able to pace myself.
I’m sometimes too hard on myself, due to me wanting times to turn out perfect, which leads to unnecessary frustration. As an entrepreneur, actually just a human in general, I’ve learned how to give myself grace.
