We recently connected with Brianna Moore and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brianna, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resiliency seems to be something that builds up over time. Once you know you’re capable of accomplishing or surviving something hard/new/scary, your capacity for the next thing grows. I kind of think there is no other option but to be resilient. I have always had a very driven and gritty personality, and giving up is not really an option for me. I have experienced some really hard seasons in life and because I chose to embrace it instead of run from it, I have come out better on the other side. I love that resiliency can be applied to life circumstances as well as to creativity. It’s fun to experiment with different types of shoots or styles and if it doesn’t end up working out well, that’s okay. I probably learned something along the way.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a photographer! I’ve loved photography since I was 13 years old. I’ve done lots of different types of photography over the years including portraits, weddings, fashion, and more. Currently, I am focusing on more editorial photography (fashion, lifestyle, musicians etc.).
I used to dress up in hysterical outfits with my friends (at the time we thought we looked good), and we would do photoshoots in the backyard with my point and shoot camera. Those were the formative days that made me fall in love with fashion photography. Having an idea for a shoot in my mind and then making it come to life in camera is a feeling that I will never get over. It’s a thrill and I absolutely love it.
As for photographing musicians, when my favorite artists would come out with their newest CD, I would lay on my bedroom floor with my head right next to the stereo and listen to the whole album start to finish. I would take out the little album booklet with the lyrics on it and flip through all the images inside and fall in love with what I was seeing. The concept of creating images to go along with or to represent music visually is so much fun. I remember thinking “I’m going to take these photos one day.” It wasn’t until a couple years after I moved to Nashville I realized, oh wait, I could actually make that childhood dream come true.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Bravery, humility, and practice. When I think back on my earlier days of photography, I remember I was learning so much all the time and I was having a blast being creative and trying new things. Seek out mentors who are doing what you want to be doing. Apply for internships. Sign up for classes and courses to learn something new in your field. Network with other creatives or adjacent industries (in my case that would be other photographers, models, hair and make up artists, musicians etc). Be bold, stay humble, and keep honing in your craft and putting your own signature to it (it’s easy to copy others in a world full of content, but really make it your own).
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking to collaborate with others! For example, I have an upcoming shoot with a local model, stylist, and HMU artist. We are working together to create a shoot we can use to showcase each of our areas of expertise and build our portfolios.
I have another session in the works for someone looking for more of a lifestyle/branding shoot. Those are so much fun too because I can work alongside the individual to help them identify the look they’re after and create images that represent their brand and personality.
I’ve also recently shot with a couple up and coming musicians in the Nashville areas and would love to work with more artists in the near future. Feel free to send me a DM on Instagram at @briannamoore or email me at [email protected] if you’d like to work together.
