We recently connected with Brice Gatewood and have shared our conversation below.
Brice , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I truly believe that my resilience came solely from my upbringing. I grew up in Memphis it’s a tough blue collar city for sure it reflects my ability to bounce back. Being raised there it taught me to always work as hard as you can and everything else will fall in place. Even if you’re down, consistently will always take you wherever you wish to go.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Brice and I’m a creative director and photographer in the downtown Chicago area! I started my business a year ago after moving back to Chicago from Atlanta. I came here without a plan but I had a dream and eventually I just put my mind towards my goal of becoming a professional photographer and suddenly things started to take off as I worked towards my goal. My focus is to network and build relationships with my clients anyone who books with me automatically is treated like family.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me the three skills were more mental than anything. The first one was simply patience I had to understand that everything happens on its own time and sometimes you can’t force things. The second skill was definitely editing I took this as seriously as I could and eventually I started to notice better quality photos. And the third skill was communication you always have to be on the same page with the models that you are working with, chemistry is very important in photography.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My creative vision development has improved a lot since I first started. Things that I have in my mind just starts to come to life as I’m working and it’s so beautiful when the finished product comes together. Another thing I have improved on is networking I’ve become more vocal and I’m starting to feel comfortable opening up with people who do the same thing as me.
