Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bridget Sicsko. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bridget, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
I attribute a lot of my communication skills to being part of a Co-Ed Professional Business Fraternity called Alpha Kappa Psi when I was in college. During that time, I was doing a lot of public speaking, giving presentations and refining my interview skills to support my career once I graduated college. Speaking is such a great way to iterate ideas, learn how to tell stories and perfect the art of communicating effectively.
Beyond college, starting a business and being an entrepreneur is like an incubator for effective communication. Here’s what I mean by that—to be able to sell something is to be able to communicate a message effectively to a target audience or customer. We need to be able to understand what that person is feeling, thinking, and what they are already investing in. We then can use that deep sense of understanding to incorporate into our sales copy. Communication is everything as a business owner—so those skills I learned early on about speaking and sharing ideas have not gone to waste!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Many describe me as a multi-passionate entrepreneur as I always seem to have my hands in an exciting new project. Currently, I’m still speaking and teaching yoga locally, trying my hand at making sourdough bread, doing my herbalism training and working with a non-profit for veterans all in New Jersey. On the business front, I am full steam ahead with my latest business venture, Visibility on Purpose.
Together with a business partner and publicist, Lydia Bagarozza, we saw the huge need for small business owners who were doing amazing things, but struggling to get more eyes on their business. It can be challenging to breakthrough the noise of larger companies who have huge advertising and marketing budgets. We believe in cool businesses and brands being known for the amazing things they’re doing, so we decided to start Visibility on Purpose. We teach these small business owners how to grow their business through Pr and media exposure—think teaching them exactly how to get featured on tv, on podcasts and in top tier publications like mindbodygreen, Time, Bustle and more.
We offer PR Consulting, PR Programs and PR Brand Audits for small business owners and entrepreneurs.
This has been such a fun endeavor to grow!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me, the three most important qualities or skills that have been most impactful are: Meditation/Mindfulness, Taking Small Action Steps and Kindness.
1. Meditation/Mindfulness—As someone who is not only a business owner, but also a human traversing this 3D world with its rollercoaster of ups and downs, I’ve found it imperative to incorporate a meditation or mindfulness practice into my daily life. The ability to step back, take a few deep breaths and relax even for a moment or two has not only been studied to support stress responses in the body, but it’s also so helpful as a business owner.
2. Small Action Steps—I live by the life philosophy “Dream Big, Start Small”. The idea is that we have big goals or dreams but we support those big goals by taking small action steps daily. These small action steps then compound overtime in the direction of our dreams. This philosophy is helpful towards any goal in life or business.
3. Kindness—We all know why this one matters. At the end of the day, we are all just humans trying to do our best. I’ve found that the more kind I am to others, the more kindness I receive in return.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson is one of my favorite books of all time. He shares the idea that small steps and mundane actions compound overtime and help us achieve any goal in life. As a business owner and someone who considers themselves an athlete, this philosophy has been crucial. For instance, in business sometimes things don’t happen overnight. But by understanding the concepts Jeff shared in the book, I understand that no small action goes unnoticed and as long as I keep up it builds over time. In the context of fitness, I’ve run many distance endurance races where this philosophy has played a crucial role mentally. Instead of thinking about races at being 22 miles long, I broke it down into bite sized steps to help me cross the finish line. This book has such relatable examples!
