We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brie Burgett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brie below.
Brie, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
My self-discipline is rooted in a lifelong journey of personal growth and aspiration. It’s the result of understanding that success is a combination of consistency and determination. I’ve always believed that true accomplishments start with a commitment to goals in the face of adversity.
Growing up, I learned the value of hard work and perseverance from my parents, who instilled in me the importance of staying focused on my dreams and then showing up and putting in the work to achieve them.
Throughout my life, I’ve sought out opportunities that push me beyond my comfort zone, whether it was academic pursuits, sports, or joining the Marine Corps. I’ve come to realize that self-discipline isn’t about rigid restrictions and having zero tolerance for setbacks or failures, but rather about channeling energy and passion in a purposeful direction.
Moreover, I’ve had the privilege of encountering mentors and role models who exemplified the power of self-discipline in their own achievements. Their stories of triumph, coupled with the understanding that discipline is a gateway to personal transformation, have further fueled my commitment to consistently striving for excellence. Harnessing self-discipline isn’t just about meeting goals—it’s about cultivating a mindset of resilience, adaptability, and an unyielding belief in one’s potential.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I hope to help inspire others to chase their dreams for breaking the mold and challenging the status quo. I believe it is important to never let anyone’s perception or opinion shape who you are because only you should have that power over your life!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three pivotal qualities that have helped me are resilience, continuous learning, and fostering meaningful relationships.
Resilience- Life inevitably presents hurdles, but it’s the ability to rebound, adapt, and keep moving forward that defines our trajectory. Embrace setbacks as stepping stones, extracting lessons from each experience. Develop a growth mindset—view challenges as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles. Remember, setbacks are temporary, but the strength you cultivate through resilience endures.
Continuous learning- In a world evolving at breakneck speed, the hunger to acquire new skills and knowledge is a game-changer. Embrace curiosity as your greatest asset. Seek out mentors, resources, and educational opportunities. Whether it’s formal education, online courses, or self-study, prioritize expanding your horizons.
Building a community- Collaboration and connection amplify our impact. Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and allies who inspire and challenge you. Be an active listener and a genuine supporter. Seek out opportunities to network, share experiences, and collaborate.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
There are two books that have really inspired me and I re-read every year- James Clear’s ‘Atomic Habits’ and Keith Ferrazzi’s ‘Never Eat Alone.
In James Clear’s “Atomic Habits,” he talks about the transformative power of incremental progress. The idea that we should focus on becoming 1% better each day and the exploration of how small changes compound over time to create substantial results. This principle isn’t just about improvement; it’s about embracing the journey. It eloquently highlights that success isn’t defined by grand leaps, but by consistent steps forward.
Key Advice from “Atomic Habits”:
The key to progress is consistency, not perfection. Focus on improving by 1% daily. Whether it’s mastering a skill, fostering a positive habit, or working toward a goal, these incremental gains add up to remarkable achievements. The path to success is paved with daily commitment, not momentous leaps.
Keith Ferrazzi’s “Never Eat Alone” shows just how important networking and relationship-building is for all aspects of life. He talks about the power of collaboration and the principle of ‘co-elevation.’ Networking isn’t just about collecting business cards—it’s about cultivating authentic relationships that foster mutual growth.
Key Advice from “Never Eat Alone”:
Relationships are the cornerstone of success. Authentic connections lead to collaborations that propel us forward. Network not to merely expand your circle, but to offer value, support, and opportunities. The power of shared success elevates everyone involved. The road to achievement isn’t solitary; it’s a collective effort that amplifies individual potential.
