Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brie Hayden. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Brie with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My strong work ethic stems naturally from my love of learning and the pursuit of growth. This intrinsic motivation drives both the business and artistic aspects of my work. From a young age, I’ve been interested in acquiring new skills and consistently setting goals for myself. Each goal presents an opportunity to challenge myself, and I find it most effective to outline specific steps to achieve them. I detail my goals by time, planning my day with tasks scheduled at specific times for short-term objectives, and setting calendar dates for long-term milestones. By always striving to learn more and grow through means of goal-setting, I am able to maintain a strong work ethic that is both sustainable and fulfilling.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a full-time artist, specializing in graphite drawings of glass bottles in the style of hyperrealism. My latest work focuses on the intricate beauty of antique liquor bottles. With each piece, I work to capture subtle changes in texture, from the torn and stained paper labels to the aged textures of the glass. I also enjoy digging into the history of the bottles I draw, uncovering stories behind the brands, many of which are pre-Prohibition and no longer exist. This research adds a rich, narrative layer to my work. The Antique Bottle Series aims to not only highlight the beauty found in aging, but also embody the rich stories and personal histories behind each bottle. I offer original pieces, limited edition prints, and custom commissioned works, allowing me to connect with a diverse audience. I share my work on social media (@briehaydenart), in galleries around Virginia, and at fine art festivals.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three concepts that have had a tremendous impact on my journey and that I would give as advice to artists just starting out are prioritizing organization, being bold, and perseverance. I consistently see the benefits of being organized in my everyday life translate to achieving long-term goals. Staying organized helps me manage my time effectively, keep track of important details, and reduce stress. For new artists, this includes everything from recording all business finances, setting self-imposed deadlines, staying on top of emails, planning your next pieces, and more. As an independent artist, I believe you absolutely have to create your own opportunities—they won’t always just fall into your lap. Being bold has led to more success than I imagined. Don’t be afraid to reach out directly to brands, potential clients, and collectors. Present your work confidently and professionally. Taking the initiative can open doors you might not have known existed. Perseverance is essential in the art world. There will be periods of lulls and periods of nonstop work. It’s important to stay resilient through it all. During slower times, remember why you started and use this period to strategize and create your next opportunities.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
As an artist who primarily draws wine & liquor bottles, I am always seeking out opportunities to collaborate with brands in the spirits industry. Potential collaborators can reach me directly via email at contact@briehayden.com.
