Meet Brigham (they/them) Mosley

We were lucky to catch up with Brigham (they/them) Mosley recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Brigham (they/them), so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

Oh goodness! What even IS success?! I think the truest truth to this question is radical acceptance that, for me as a trans person, there are rooms and spaces and people who just aren’t going to “get” me – and that used to hurt and frustrate me – and a younger version of me was all about Teaching and Educating and Being An Example but now I realize that that was centering all my decisions on others’ perceptions. So now there is a freedom in knowing that there are people and places that aren’t super interested in me (and those people and places aren’t usually people and places I’m interested in being affiliated with!). So now I’m led by “what feels good?”, “what feels exciting?”, “what do I think the universe is presenting for me?” – and those tend to be the greatest experiences! It’s when you’re forcing things that those things tend to feel forced, right?

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m a theatre-maker/writer/performer/drag artist. Most of my work is autobiographical and I perform it myself – usually in some sort of glittery genderqueer drag get-up. Often with songs – always in heels!

I also am a producer and maker in the audio space – I work for a cool company, Spoke Media, and there I wrote PlayStation’s #1 rated The Official The Last of Us Podcast, HBO’s Between the World and Me Podcast, among many others. I’m Head of Creative Development at Spoke Media where I’ve also EP’d hits such as Under Cover of Knight and HiberNation.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Curiosity, Passion, Resilience

You have to love what you do and you have to be able to handle disappointments and rejections. You have to be cool with whatever timeline you’re given. Find ways to pick yourself up during the hard times. Find ways to memorialize the good times so you can remember during the inevitable valleys. Read everything. See everything. And live your life – especially if you’re an artist – great art is about LIFE, not about art – you have to LIVE! PAY ATTENTION!

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

I’m building a new community! And it’s intimidating! Starting over again in my mid-30s – hey-oh!

My husband and I relocated to LA from Dallas and we’re working to build out our artistic community here. There are times where it feels like I’m 22 years old again and I am so overwhelmed by the networking and gaps in my knowledge of the local theatre/performance community – BUT we go out! We see things! We take every performance gig! We meet the people! And it’s working! But omg so much solidarity to everyone in a new city making friends and connections bc it’s HARD and SCARY!
