Meet Brit Dahl

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brit Dahl. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Brit, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?

At 33 years old I finished graduate school with a Master of Arts in Healthcare Administration. I had spent the previous eight years of my life completely engrossed in my career and education with the thought that my self-worth was directly tied to the successes of those two things. I knew that I was going to need to find a true hobby that really lit my soul on fire. I really never had any “true” hobbies. I always felt that taking time for myself was selfish and I should be serving others, working, etc.
Inspired by my uncle, I bought my first camera. Just a small camera that wasn’t anything fancy but I absolutely fell in love with wildlife photography. I never really touched a camera until then and over the last two years I have worked hard to teach myself the ins-and-outs of photography and through this, I found the most true sense of self I have ever experienced. My photography has become the most important part of my selfcare routine, as it brings me such a peace within myself that I cannot explain. Ensuring that I make time for this amidst a very busy and stressful job has ensured I can bring my best self to work and also bring my best self to my husband and dogs. In addition to wildlife photography, once a week I volunteer at my local wildlife rehab and that is also something I do for self-care. Providing care to wildlife during their rehabilitation brings me a sense of accomplishment and makes me feel apart of something that is impactful in a broader sense.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My full-time job is in healthcare IT but what I spend a lot of time focusing on outside of that is my photography and refining my skillset. I hope to open up my print store on my website within the next few months, and I have an exciting trip planned to northern Minnesota for this years owl irruption!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Tenacity, curiosity, and kindness. I would encourage everyone to try to be open-minded and approach situations and ideas with a sense of wonder and openness. Ask questions like “Why?” and “How?” to deepen your understanding. I love to talk to people with different viewpoints and backgrounds and ask them about their experiences and insights. This is one of my most favorite things to do. I love people—and I love their stories and I love to learn! Asking questions helps you better learn about your own interests and dive deeper into topics that fascinate you. Research, read, and ask experts to help you.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

I feel like I have reached a bit of a crossroads in my life in regards to where I want to go next specifically related to my career and work. As I have really leaned into my love for the outdoors, wildlife, and photography I feel called to do something greater than what I am doing in my “9-5” so I have been definitely thinking about what the next 3-5 years might look like for me to ensure I am being true to my authentic self and the things that bring me the most happiness and fill my heart.
