We recently connected with Brit Tobin and have shared our conversation below.
Brit, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Discovering what truly makes you come alive is the golden ticket. I’ve always had a passion for comedy and storytelling, but once I hit my stride with my series (Garbage People), we were off and running. That’s when I really started to feel the fire. Creating laughter and connecting with people has always been my driving force, but once I realized it was on me to make it happen, everything fell into place. What’s the one thing you can’t live without? That’s how I look at it. Also: does it terrify you a little? Good!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a showrunner and director, and what excites me most is the edge of a cliff. The opportunity to bring stories to life that resonate with audiences on a personal level. You could walk away from a cliff and say nothing — or, jump and hope that parachute works. With each project, there are two key ingredients that have remained consistent and set my brand apart: pushing boundaries and innovation – constantly exploring new creative ideas that keep things fresh and authentic. Everything has been done a thousand times over, the secret is adding your own magic to it. Though Garbage People is episodic, every episode adheres to those “rules.”
As for what’s new, I’m super excited about the premiere of “Garbage People: The Movie,” which is a feature-length continuation of my original adult animation series “Garbage People”. The focus is an ever-so-timely Ai takeover that not only jeopardizes the town’s livelihood, but the cushy TV careers of the show’s main characters Patches and Peel. We’ve got five original songs, each brought to life by an ensemble of truly ingenious artists. We recently had our first pre-screening which was such a blast, and now that we’re out of the woods with production, I can say that final product is indeed epic.
Last but absolutely not least, in addition to our original cast returning, we’re thrilled to announce two new voice talents who will be making their debut in the film — influencers Tawny Platis and Austin Von Letkemann (Mandatory Funday). We’ve had such an awesome experience working with them. I’m counting down the days until everyone can see them on the big screen!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’d say the top three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, desire to learn, and the balls to just go for it. What have you got to lose?
My advice to those who are early in their career is to build resilience by embracing failure as a learning experience. Keep your goals in close proximity, knock them down one by one, and keep going. Find what lights you up and pursue it with relentless enthusiasm and determination even when you’re not feeling up to it. That’s when you come up with the best stuff.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the professional realm, the past year has been a whirlwind of growth and evolution. We just surpassed 4 million viewers! I’d say one of the most significant areas of advancement has without a doubt been transitioning to new frontiers in the industry. For me professionally as well as the series’ journey. There’s always something new to learn, people to meet, and new skills to add to the tool belt. It’s busy and I like it.
Creating this film has been so much fun and seeing it come to life has been incredibly rewarding. I never even thought I’d make a film and now I want to make more. I can’t wait to see where this epic journey takes us! Thank you for having me!
