Meet Britney Butler

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Britney Butler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Britney below.

Hi Britney , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
In the world we live in, it’s often said not to judge a book by its cover, yet the reality is that we’re all guilty of it at times. Over the years, I’ve learned to defy these judgments because of how others may perceive me based on appearances. Society often imposes the idea that conforming to a certain image equates to success, wealth, and power. However, I’ve come to realize that it’s what’s on the inside that truly matters. Your character carries you through rooms and sustains relationships.

My journey of being the only one in the room who looks like me has been filled with its own set of challenges and opportunities. Effectiveness and success in such situations emanate from within. I’ve cultivated a robust sense of self and honed the art of articulate communication that commands attention. I relish the opportunity to address audiences and infuse life and encouragement into those who lend an ear.

When people first cast their gaze upon me, they often underestimate or diminish my potential for success. However, once I begin to recount my story—where I come from, how I’ve arrived at this point of success—there’s an almost automatic, jaw-dropping reaction. It’s a source of amusement for me each time. If I had a dollar for every instance I’ve received such a reaction, it would be quite the treasure.

Having a profound sense of self and a deep understanding of how to nurture relationships are integral to the effectiveness and success of anyone who stands out in a crowd. We are all unique, and it’s precisely because of this uniqueness that we bring valuable insights and knowledge to situations, which can also serve to benefit others around us and in the future.

My experience of being the sole individual in the room who looks like me has been an invaluable learning journey. It has molded me into a more adaptable, resilient, and self-aware professional. Moreover, it has reinforced in me the vital importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, underscoring the immense value that diverse perspectives bring to any organization.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

After dedicating eight years to civil service and pursuing a career as a realtor for five years, I can confidently declare that I have discovered my life’s passion. Every day, I wake up with a profound sense of gratitude, eager to conduct my business and serve my clients. Surprisingly, even though I am working, it never truly feels like work. If I were to encapsulate my feelings about being a realtor, I would describe this role as immensely enjoyable, consistently challenging, and incredibly rewarding.

Like any entrepreneurial endeavor, there are inevitable highs and lows in the real estate business, and the journey is a continuous process of growth and expansion. The keys to success in this field are unwavering consistency and unwavering dedication. Initially, my focus in real estate was primarily on residential properties. However, as I have evolved over the years, I’ve ventured into the international real estate market. This transition has broadened my horizons, allowing me to consider entry into the commercial space and cater to a diverse clientele seeking properties both abroad and within the United States.

This expansion into international real estate has proven to be particularly advantageous, as it provides a safety net during times when the local market becomes challenging. I derive immense satisfaction from learning about how different countries approach buying, selling, and investing in real estate. Armed with this valuable knowledge, I can offer my clients the insights they need to make informed decisions.

Beyond my real estate ventures, I am currently in the process of completing my first two books. Embarking on this journey as an author has been a deeply transformative and, at times, arduous experience. I’ve grappled with writer’s block, moments of doubt about the substance of my books, and wondered if the world is ready to hear my voice. However, I’ve persisted, pushing through these challenges and overcoming insecurities. My belief in myself, my unwavering confidence in my abilities, and my conviction that my story will inspire others have been my driving forces.

My own story serves as a powerful source of inspiration for me, as I’ve lived through the pivots and adjustments necessary to navigate my journey. As I continue to climb the mountain of success, I remain committed to achieving all the goals I’ve set for myself and my family.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, I believe three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge have been most impactful in shaping my path to success. These are adaptability, the ability to build meaningful relationships, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.

Throughout my journey, adaptability has been crucial. The ability to pivot, adjust, and thrive in different circumstances and environments has allowed me to overcome challenges and seize new opportunities. My advice for those early in their journey is to embrace change and develop a mindset that views challenges as opportunities for growth. Be open to trying new things, taking on unfamiliar tasks, and learning from your experiences. This quality will serve you well in an ever-evolving world.

Building strong and genuine relationships has been instrumental in my journey. These connections have opened doors, provided support during tough times, and enriched my personal and professional life. To those starting out, I recommend investing time in networking and nurturing relationships. Be authentic, show genuine interest in others, and offer your support whenever you can. Building a network of mentors, peers, and allies can provide guidance, opportunities, and a safety net during challenging moments.

The commitment to continuous learning and self-improvement has been a driving force in my journey. Staying curious, seeking out new knowledge, and honing your skills are essential for staying relevant and competitive. Early in your journey, prioritize education and personal development. Invest in acquiring new skills, stay informed about industry trends, and don’t be afraid to seek out mentors or take courses that can accelerate your growth. Remember that learning is a lifelong process, and each experience contributes to your expertise.

Adaptability, relationship-building, and a dedication to continuous learning have been pivotal in my journey. My advice to those embarking on their own paths is to cultivate these qualities and skills. Embrace change, foster meaningful connections, and never stop seeking opportunities for self-improvement. With these attributes in your arsenal, you’ll be well-prepared to navigate the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead in your journey toward success.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I was introduced to the concept of the 12-week year earlier this year, and it has had a profound impact on both my personal and professional growth. The book “The 12 week Year” by Brian P. Moran, Michael Lennington. Addresses the issue of procrastination and emphasizes the importance of setting clear plans, visions, and goals. It provides a detailed roadmap for executing these goals.

As someone who values time management and utilizes time blocking techniques, this book has enabled me to not only implement my business objectives but also effectively manage my personal goals through time blocking. By following the book’s guidance, I’ve been able to strategically plan my calendar, allowing me to tackle both my business goals and personal projects with precision. This approach has propelled me to new heights in both my personal and professional endeavors.
