Meet Brittany Braunling

We recently connected with Brittany Braunling and have shared our conversation below.

Brittany , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

In my line of work creativity is key to being successful. Not only do you have to be good at what you are doing, but you have to be creative and think outside the box. Being creative keeps people interested and keeps customers guessing and awaiting what is next. I love to do research on what is trending and what is becoming popular within the food scene. After researching, the key to success is recipe development. Recipe development is my favorite part of the job. I love to think of creative ways to incorporate flavors together and create flavor combinations that most people wouldn’t imagine being included within a bread business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

The majority of my adult career has always been in the restaurant business. I graduated from Culinary school and have worked several positions within several different restaurants. I started my career in Serving and Bartending, and after school, moved onto back of house positions. Working in restaurants quickly became my passion. After working several years in the food industry and directly in restaurants it was time to create a better work/home life balance for myself and my son. I then started working from home, but very quickly missed being in the kitchen.

I was looking for a personal challenge, and thats when I started my Sourdough Starter from scratch. After lots of research, and trial and error, I had made a beautiful, delicious, loaf of bread. The trial and error aspect was fun, and it was exciting for me to take my loaves of bread to friends and family for them to try. After a while, I kept hearing that I needed to sell my bread, and that is when Britt&Butter Co. was born. I am still very new to this journey, we are a little over a year old, but I have had so much support and positive feedback. I am having a ton of fun and I am excited to see where this journey takes me.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Knowledge, Perseverance, and Dedication.

Keep going, and don’t give up. Ideas are easy, but following through, creating a business, and trying to figure out all of the small business things isn’t easy. There are going to be plenty of days where you are going to feel like throwing in the towel and giving up, but if you have a solid idea, and a great support system, anything is possible. It takes a lot of work, a lot of late nights, a lot of research, and a lot of mistakes, but it is all worth it. Do your research, reach out to other local small business owners for help and advise. The small business community is incredibly supportive in Columbus.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

My number one challenge right now is space. I am a licensed home bakery, which means I am doing all of this out of my home. I am incredibly limited on space. From production, to storage, it is a lot different and much harder then working out of a commercial kitchen. I think the biggest thing right now is just knowing my limits. I want to push myself and I want to grow, and I want to be able to do it all, but all of that will come with time. The goal is to have more space one day, and once that happens, the opportunities to grow will be endless!
