Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Brave. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Developing these skill sets is a process, not a one-off or some magical “aha” moment. I think that’s the biggest misconception and can affect our confidence in the process. We beat ourselves up for not being more confident and that just results in a lose-lose. Personally, I’m my most confident when I’m doing things that are good for me or I’m good at. Getting on stage, working, building and making things all contribute to my confidence and keep me feeling busy and valued and distracted from any negative self-talk. Working out, making good and healthy choices, treating myself are all things that help too. It’s okay to need to actively remind yourself of all the good things about you, too. All of that fluctuates dayto day because it’s impossible to show up in the same mindset 24/7. Like a lot of us I grew up with bullies for one reason or another. Being a girl, being a funny girl, being short, being small, being one thing and not being enough of another. My parents helped in curbing a lot of that. I think focusing on what makes you different and leaning the hell into that helps you embrace yourself even if it takes time.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a comedian and entertainer. I perform and create and make things that hopefully make people, laugh, think, feel good or all three. I probably make things that piss people off too but… you win some you lose some!!!!! I always try to loop in causes I feel passionate about into all my shows and projects as well (reproductive rights, domestic violence awareness, etc.) I think it’s exciting to be your own boss and do something like stand up where you have full control over everything you say, make, do, your schedule, all of it.
I’m based in Miami but lately I am ON TOUR! Performing mostly not in Miami which is exciting (check my website, www.brittanybrave.live), I’m working on a docuspecial about Miami comedy and also launching a podcast (long overdueee) called Big Yikes.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Work ethic is #1. Talent is great and passion is exciting but the person who works the hardest can lap all of that. Showing up consistently and always trying the best puts the odds in your favor to get everything you want and deserve. I think second to that self-awareness is a big one. Knowing where you’re at and being really brutally honest about your progress and where you are in relation to your goals is key. Being self aware prevents you from any kind of delusion. Lastly, I used to work in PR for many years and while I thought that time spent on a 9-to-5 was a waste.. I’ve ended up applying all of those skills to market myself, coordinate my own career and more. Everything matters.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Giving myself grace! HALLELUJAH! So big and important, guys. Allowing myself to make mistakes and fail and work through that in a healthy way not only allowed me to take care of myself better but also allowed me to be a better friend and person to everyone in my life. There’s a lot of beauty in the gray area and not being exactly where you want to be at all times is okay. I think you find when you give yourself grace you actually accomplish so much more and do a better job at it, too.
