We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Green a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity is like a muscle. You have to exercise it, nourish it, and sometimes, even let it rest.
I’m a sponge for inspiration. I enjoy exploring different cultures, watching films, and listen to music from all genres. The more I expose myself to, the more ideas spark within me. ‘m not afraid to try new things, even if they seem a little out there. I experiment with different fabrics, colors, and silhouettes. I sketch, I drape, I sew, I even paint sometimes. The key is to let go of inhibitions and just have fun.
Bouncing ideas off other artists can be incredibly stimulating. It’s like a creative cross-pollination that leads to unexpected and exciting results. Managing self care is also a must with keeping my creativity alive, sometimes, you need to step away from the drawing board and let your mind wander. I like to take walks in nature, meditate, or simply spend time with loved ones. It’s when I’m relaxed and refreshed that the best ideas come to me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an entrepreneur for a Luxury Candle brand Ani+Co. as well as a Fashion Designer for a resort wear brand called DeLanzo. both of my brands are influenced by my Caribbean heritage, and aim to give back to community through pay it forward events. I’m very much inspired by bright colors that make me feel like the sun… Bright and filled with glow. My brands represent the beauty of loving where you come from and celebrate the importance of wellness and self love. We’re excited to continue the journey of growing and glowing communities.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Creating a business legally (LLC, Trademark process), Learning how to design packaging, and networking. My advise to those who are on the path of starting a business is to research everything you have questions on, learn new ways, how to be most cost efficient, do as much research on all the in’s and outs of having a business and just try new strategies. Also have patience and always do things with passion.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I step away for a long duration of time until my body feels it’s ready to come back. Sometimes stepping away and getting fresh air or taking a month away from work can really rebalance everything.
