Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany H. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
When people ask me what I do for fun, my go-to answer is working out. Fitness is a big part of my self-care routine—whether it’s hitting the gym, going for a run or bike ride, or simply taking a walk around the neighborhood while listening to an audiobook. I also love going thrifting—it’s such a fun way to unwind, hunt for unique finds, and take a break from the everyday routine. Prioritizing self-care helps me reset, stay focused, and be more present in all areas of my life. It makes me a better mom, a more effective professional, and allows me to show up fully for the people around me. I also make it a priority to grab coffee with my best friend whenever we can, so we can catch up without the constant interruptions that come with parenting. Taking that time for myself helps me bring my best energy to everything else I do.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I recently started my own photography business in Michigan, and I absolutely love it. My day job is very science-based and data-driven, so having photography as my creative outlet has been such a fun contrast. It allows me to step into a more artistic, ‘go-with-the-flow’ mindset, which I’ve really come to appreciate.
While I haven’t been in the photography business for long, weddings have quickly become my favorite thing to shoot. It’s funny because, when I was just starting out, I attended a mom’s photography retreat hosted by Creative As A Mother, and I remember saying I would never shoot a wedding. But just a few months later, I second-shot a wedding with another photographer—and absolutely loved it.
Wedding days are long, fast-paced, and physically demanding—you’re constantly on your feet, moving from one moment to the next. But despite the challenges, there’s something so special about witnessing two people in love, surrounded by their closest friends and family, and knowing that the photos I take will become part of their story—on their walls, in their albums, even as their phone backgrounds.
One of the most rewarding parts of starting my business has been sharing my work with my friends and family. My day job isn’t something they typically get to see, so it’s been amazing to have them reach out for sessions and support my creative journey. I’ve had the chance to capture Christmas photos for loved ones, and this summer, I’m even photographing my cousin’s wedding reception in Chicago. It’s been such a fulfilling experience, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My career journey has been a unique blend of corporate America and small business ownership, giving me a well-rounded perspective on success in both arenas. Throughout my experience, three key principles have helped guide me:
Be Present. It’s easy to get caught up in constantly striving for the next step, but true growth comes from being fully engaged in the present. When you’re present, you catch important moments and opportunities that might otherwise pass you by. Whether in a meeting, on a shoot, or running a business, being intentional and focused has been a game-changer for me.
Dream Big. It may sound cliché, but having a clear vision of where you want to go—whether that’s aiming for your boss’s job, running your own business, or reaching a specific financial milestone—makes all the difference. Defining your goals early on helps shape the steps you take to get there.
Keep Learning & Ask Questions. I have three Master’s degrees and a 40-day Duolingo streak because I truly love learning. I’m never afraid to ask questions when I don’t know something because I believe that curiosity is one of the greatest assets you can have. As the saying goes, ‘If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.’ We live in a time where knowledge is at our fingertips, and I believe continuously expanding your skillset is key to success.
These three principles—being present, dreaming big, and staying curious—have shaped my career and continue to push me forward in both the corporate and entrepreneurial worlds.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal photography client is someone who embraces the experience and isn’t afraid to have fun in front of the camera. They trust me to capture their moments authentically but also feel comfortable communicating their vision if they have something specific in mind. I love working with couples and individuals who appreciate storytelling through photography and value the emotion behind each image. Whether they’re playful and spontaneous or a bit more reserved, I want my clients to feel at ease, knowing that their personalities and connections will shine through in every shot.
