We recently connected with Brittany Nelson and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Let’s see…. Well as a child to my adolescent years, my mom always had me and my sisters clean the house. We used to have a designated clean day which was early Saturday mornings. My mom even had us clean something when we got home in order to go outside. She use to say if her house don’t smell and look clean then we cant go outside and my siblings and I always wanted to go outside to play. we would even clean things that are already clean lol. Since then, going through my twenties and into my thirties, I always instilled in on things being cleaned in my home. I even instill it in my children, which gave me an epiphany to start my own business. I felt like since I clean at home and don’t get any type of recognition lol, I should start my own cleaning business and be paid for it. I really also enjoy cleaning. It gives me peace and that made me realize what my purpose is. That purpose for me is to help those who can’t clean or don’t have time to clean.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have a cleaning business called the Scrub Queen. It took me months to come up with this name because I had some many ideas from others and what I had came up with. It was a really had decision until one day I spoke to my sister about it and she gave me the best advice. She said come up with something that best describes you since its only you now in your company. At first, I was like you know what that makes sense. That made the decision even more better to make. I was like the Brit Brat cleaning business. I thought about it and was like nope that’s not going to work. Then I came up with “the Scrub Queens” and was like nope, let me take this “s” off of it. So once I did that “the Scrub Queen” was born. I feel the most exciting or special thing about my business is the satisfaction of clients once the job is done. To see my clients happy and thrilled really gives me the confidence and strive to keep pushing my business through. I inquire new clients almost everyday and I also travel, so if you need me I’m there.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my opinion, I believe the three qualities or skills that were most impactful during my journey is patience, willingness, and gratitude. I say this because what is life without patience, I believe there would be chaos. In a business you always try to avoid chaos because it could be bad for business. Nowadays, its called “word of mouth” or ranting on social media for your business to be aired out negatively and have other potential clients not wanting to do business. With me I try to avoid that because I don’t want my business to be bad business so I ensure positive vibes all around with my clients. I believe willingness was impactful in my journey and currently still because I’m willing to go that extra mile for my business to succeed. Being a business owner, you don’t always want to settle for what you have, you want to do more and achieve more. Since my business is thriving, I want to excel it more and having that willingness helps and motivates me to keep pushing till I’m finally I’m content in where I want to succeed in my business. Lastly gratitude has been an impact in my journey because I’m so thankful for my clients, my family and my friends who really been there supporting me and not think its some crazy journey or scheme. I love what I do and I’m absolutely grateful for it. It makes me happy and helps me when I’m down. I’m very passionate about my business and cleaning. So yes gratitude, patience, and having willingness has made a huge impact on my journey and its only molding me to do better.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one obstacle or challenge that I am currently facing is attracting more clients. As of now i currently work for a private contracting cleaning company that has helped me gain some clients. I’ve promoted my business on social media and also flyers to help me overcome this challenge. I also have business cards that I pass out. Its helping but not how I would like. I’m not letting that discourage me but motivate me. This challenge or obstacle shows me that it is a greater purpose for my business and not something that is passing through. I think that is why I’m not letting down myself or my business because it will thrive.
