We were lucky to catch up with Brittany Samsil recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I tend to find creativity in everything. Nature, traveling to new places, my children and in the simple things that make me happy.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My story goes back pretty far back. I started my artistic career after my first art show at 12. It was in a local coffee shop. I sold out and gained 3 commissions from my first show. Back then I only painted still life and landscapes with oil paint. Fast forward 11 years….I mostly paint portraits and use acrylic paint and charcoal pencil. Life is too short to wait for oil paint to dry haha. What sets Art by Brittany apart is I am focused on making a treasured memory that can be passed down for generations. I seal all of my paintings in epoxy and that prevents the oils in our hands to break down the painting. Making it easy to pass down as a heirloom.
Currently I am focused on expanding my business. I am a full time artist but growing my business never stops. I have shipped to every state and several different countries but I am working on reaching more people. I plan to display in more galleries and to sell at more music/art focused festivals this year.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First and foremost, work on something EVERYDAY. You dont have to put out a masterpiece everyday but in order to stay disciplined you have to keep yourself accountable. Not everyone will see your vision, thats ok because its not their vision. Its yours for a reason, follow it. My main advice would be to keep pushing. You will be told no many times before you get a yes. Don’t allow the opinions of family or friends to alter your dreams. They won’t understand regardless of how much you express your passion for what you’re doing. Again, your vision and passions are for you and you only. You will find more support outside of your local town than you most likely will inside of it.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The number one obstacle is always the same for me. To not get stuck in my head. As an artist I spend 90% of my time in my head. What I mean by this is while painting my mind wonders through a million things…everything you could think of not just art. I consistently try to stay focused on the present. I just focus on guiding my mind. When I come up with another good painting, I write it down and then go back to what I was doing. When I’m spending time with my children and I start thinking about work I tell myself to stop and enjoy now.
