Meet Brittany Walker

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Walker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Brittany, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

I keep my creativity alive by pulling from real life situations that I have gone through or are dealing with. I like to create pieces that are relevant and deal with real life, I find when I pull from life it’s much easier to choreograph to because I can feel the movement more and not pretend.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I started dancing in Miami and fell in love with it when I watched “The Nutcracker” when I was 3 years old. My parents enrolled me in dance soon after and the rest is history! I have been so drawn to movement and art from 6 years old and remember always making up dances in my family room to classical composers. I focused on choreography in college at Belhaven University in Mississippi and honed in to the concepts I learned there and knew I was going to continue to create after school. I danced, performed, and choregraphed for numerous organizations, studios, and companies after college. I moved to Colorado in 2013 and in 2017 I started to develop ideas for having my own professional dance company. In 2020-2021 when COVID was happening I started to form Evolve Dance Project (EDP). With EDP It is connected to the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, a non-profit arts organization. It’s a blessing to have the support from the arts center and is going into it’s fifth season! In the last four years EDP has been part of the CODEO organization, outreach programs, the Pueblo Symphony, Presenting Denver Dance Festival, as well as successfully performed four full length performances at the SDC Arts Center. EDP is currently focusing on their 3rd annual summer intensive series, offering 3 summer intensives in July/August with different focuses.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Discipline, Sacrifice, and Resilience have helped me immensely through my journey. Keeping my focus on what I wanted has helped those three qualities come out naturally because I didn’t sway from my goals. Advice I would give to those in their journey is don’t be discouraged if timing of your goal doesn’t work out when you think it’s supposed to. With starting EDP, my vision started in 2017 but nothing came to fruition until 2021. Sometimes it’s not the goal, it just might be bad timing.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I love being involved with other artists! It only helps expand my artistic abilities and can help me grow. I would love to connect with musicians, or other dance companies. Can connect with me by emailing me at: evolvedanceproject@gmail.com.
