Meet Brittney Baxter

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittney Baxter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Brittney with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

Growing up, I was an athlete and a 10-year member of a youth development organization called 4-H. I think the discipline gained training to compete in sports and accomplish yearly 4-H projects instilled in me a solid work ethic.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Eat Surreal produces a line of spreads that are plant-based, nut-free, and gluten-free. Most dairy-free spreads on the market contain nuts and I saw an opportunity to provide a nut-free, dairy-free product that tasted great. After being in the workforce for over a decade I wanted to have my own food business. The pandemic pushed me to develop a packaged food product and my goal is to offer the spreads nationwide. In my third year in business, I sell the spreads at local farmers markets and in nearly 40 retail locations around Indianapolis.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three things that have been most impactful on my journey have been my tenacity, interest in cooking with whole-food ingredients and making them taste good, and my sales skills. My advice for folks early in their journey is that good enough is a great place to start. Don’t get hung up on perfectionism or making something “right” to release it. Put yourself out there and listen to the feedback to help in guiding your next steps. My advice for improving your sales skills is to read the Little Red Book of Selling by Jeffrey Gitomer.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

The number one challenge I’m currently facing is not scaling up too fast for my capabilities. I want to grow incrementally to ensure I reach the goal of selling my spreads nationwide. I stay focused on what I’m able to accomplish in the current quarter, and in the words of Jim Collins from his book Great by Choice, I look to fire bullets and not cannon balls.
