Meet Brittney Brown

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittney Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittney below.

Brittney , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

Purpose can sometimes feel as though it is stumbled upon, like you woke up one morning and now you know your niche. As I reflect back on my life, my passion for jewelry started at childhood. My late grandmother and aunt used to gift me with an assortment of accessories ranging from rings, necklaces, earrings, etc. Jewelry was always a staple in my household so when I discovered how to create my dream accessories, it felt like second nature.

I was actually unemployed when I discovered the gift of jewelry making. There was this mansion themed party and I wanted to look amazing, but with limited funds and resources, I had to use my imagination to make myself look good. I went from making my first set of bedazzled pasties to turning them into earrings. Then, I wanted to make more so I started creating sequin flower earrings that took 6 hours per set to making wired bracelets, and clearly I have been addicted ever since. Youtube University became my best friend.

Now, 6 years later, I am still addicted to the craft and am always researching the latest trends as well as style trends from previous eras. Currently, my inspiration for my latest designs derive from Old Hollywood with stars like Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge. That’s the thing I love about this passion. The ability to tap into different eras and become inspired is a gift within itself.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a jewelry designer from Jackson, MS. Even though I didn’t grow up seeing aspiring designers level up to heights that I’ve accomplished in this town, such as making spreads in Cosmopolitan Bulgaria, Vogue Ukraine and the cover of Sheen Magazine, inspiration came from everywhere here. From our style of dress, the way we talk and overall southern flare, that in itself was enough to inspire how I create and appeal to my audience. It’s just a little different and I always make it my mission to inspire and represent my hometown the best way I know how by just being myself, a country girl.

2018 was the start of my journey as a designer. I always knew, even as a young girl, that I was destined to be “famous” or a star of some sort. I just didn’t know how that would manifest. I’ve always been creative whether that was performing poetry, dancing, and even putting together an ensemble to wear, but jewelry designing was different. Being able to create whatever I envisioned in my mind and bring it to life took my passion for it to another level. I was always a fan of Betsy Johnson’s creations which ended up influencing my way of incorporating bold bright colors with more of a sophisticated touch.

Here’s a little insider on how I created the name. When creating the name for this brand, I wanted a name that would last. A name that could target men, women and children. A name that actually means something to me and had a story behind it was my mission. I’m a lover girl and a known story that everyone thinks of when they think of love is the story of Romeo and Juliet. It’s a classic love story but of course I couldn’t name my business that. The name alone has been searched and used millions of times, but what if I incorporate my son’s name, who was one at the time, in replacement of Romeo. Hence, Julian and Juliet was born. It flows so effortlessly when said and currently I’m in the process of officiating the trademark for it. Honestly, outside of my son, Julian, Julian and Juliet is my second baby.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The most important quality to obtain is CONSISTENCY. That’s the key to anything. Good or bad, if you’re consistent at it, that thing you keep doing will continue to persist. In my case, I found my niche and have been pushing it ever since 2018. Two other qualities to obtain are to have a vision and the willingness to keep learning.

With vision, write it down in plain sight. I, literally, have notebooks from the past 6 years that I’ve written down my goals and desires and have seen them come to fruition. For example, this magazine interview is a vision that I wrote down 3 years ago and look at me now, in the process of getting my second interview published for the second time this year. It may not come when you want, but trust that it is coming. It just takes patience and time.

The willingness to keep learning is super important as well. There’s a book or podcast for almost anything that you want to learn about. In my case, my favorite subjects are self development, sales and marketing, and entrepreneurship so you’ll always find me doing some type of studying. I mean, you don’t know what you don’t know so dive into it. In order to become the best, start learning from the experts that have already gained knowledge in the area which you seek.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

As stated previously, I listen to a lot of podcasts and audiobooks. Lately, I’ve been inspired by Myron Golden, Les Brown, Audria Richmond and Nichole Lynel to name a few. Their willingness to continue learning and building their empire has influenced me for many years.

These successful entrepreneurs and speakers motivate me to continue to grow and push through any obstacles that I may be facing at any time. Myron Golden speaks life into what I’m trying to accomplish. Les Brown encourages me to keep living and know that everything always works out. Audria Richmond gives me the determination and discipline that I need to obtain to elevate. Lastly, Nichole Lynel is like a big sister in my head that gives me motivation to keep pushing my brand in new, innovative ways while remaining true to myself.

I still feel as though I have a long way to go, but the most important quality that I’ve obtained from these mentors is to just get started. Start today. Start right now and figure it out along the journey.
