We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brook Harless. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brook below.
Hi Brook , thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
My optimism, despite the challenging circumstances of my past, is deeply rooted in my personal journey and the transformative experiences that have shaped me. Growing up in a tumultuous environment marked by homelessness, neglect, and abuse, I learned early on that life could be incredibly tough. Yet, even in those darkest moments, I held onto a glimmer of hope.
My optimism is a reflection of my resilience and unwavering determination. I realized that there had to be more to life than the hardships I endured, and this realization fueled my drive to not only survive but to thrive. It’s this determination that led me to volunteer work. I find my greatest fulfillment in giving back to others because I know firsthand what it’s like to be in need and how much a helping hand can mean.
My journey took a significant turn when I joined the military after high school, a path I hoped would be my lifelong career. While my military career was cut short due to medical issues, it presented me with opportunities to make a positive impact through my work as a Battalion newsletter creator, Executive Assistant, and more. Even when faced with numerous health challenges, including multiple surgeries and chronic illnesses, I refused to let these setbacks define me or deter me from my mission of helping others.
One of the most pivotal moments in my life occurred when my aunt and I were victims of a violent home invasion. This traumatic event only reinforced my determination to rise above adversity and continue advocating for those who needed support. The assailant’s subsequent incarceration and the support of the community demonstrated the power of resilience and the importance of seeking justice.
Now, as I reflect on my life’s journey, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for where I am today. I’ve overcome immense odds, and while I may face daily pain, I am alive, and I cherish each day as a gift. My optimism comes from the belief that anything is possible with determination, hard work, and a strong support system. I take pride in showing my children that regardless of where one starts in life, they can achieve their dreams with perseverance and solid core values.
In essence, my optimism is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the belief that, no matter how challenging life may be, there is always a path forward. My past has shaped me, but it does not define me. Instead, it fuels my unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others, especially those who have faced adversity like I have.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, I can identify three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have been most impactful in shaping my path:
Resilience and Determination: Growing up in extremely challenging circumstances, I learned early on the importance of resilience and determination. These qualities allowed me to not only survive but thrive despite facing adversity at every turn. My determination to create a better life for myself and my unwavering belief in the possibility of a brighter future kept me going through the toughest times. For those early in their journey, I would advise cultivating resilience by focusing on your inner strength and keeping a clear vision of your goals. Understand that setbacks are part of the journey, and your ability to bounce back from them is a measure of your resilience.
Adaptability and Versatility: My life has taken unexpected turns, from a military career cut short due to injury to the challenges of multiple surgeries and health issues. Adaptability and versatility have been crucial in navigating these changes and finding new paths forward. Being willing to pivot, learn new skills, and embrace change is essential for anyone early in their journey. Don’t be afraid to explore different avenues, as they might lead to unexpected opportunities and personal growth.
Empathy and Compassion: Through my experiences, I developed a deep sense of empathy and compassion for others who have faced adversity and hardship. This empathy drives my passion for volunteer work and my commitment to helping those in need. I believe that understanding and connecting with the struggles of others is a powerful tool for personal growth and for making a positive impact on the world. To those starting their journey, I encourage you to cultivate empathy by actively listening to others, seeking to understand their perspectives, and finding ways to support and uplift those around you.
In terms of advice for individuals early in their journey, I would offer the following:
Believe in Yourself: No matter where you come from or what challenges you face, believe in your ability to overcome obstacles and achieve your goals. Self-belief is a powerful motivator.
Never Stop Learning: Embrace a growth mindset and never stop learning. The more skills and knowledge you acquire, the more versatile and adaptable you become.
Seek Support and Mentorship: Don’t hesitate to seek support and guidance from mentors, peers, or support networks. Surrounding yourself with people who believe in your potential can make a significant difference.
Give Back: Just as you receive support along your journey, consider giving back to your community or causes that matter to you. Volunteering and helping others can be incredibly fulfilling and can lead to new opportunities.
Stay Resilient: Life is full of ups and downs, but your ability to bounce back from setbacks is what defines your journey. Stay resilient, persevere through challenges, and keep moving forward.
Embrace Empathy: Develop empathy for others and use it as a driving force for positive change. Empathy not only connects you with those around you but also enhances your ability to make a meaningful impact.
Your journey may have its share of obstacles and trials, but it’s also filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and making a difference in the lives of others. Embrace the journey with an open heart and a determined spirit, and you’ll find that your experiences can shape you into a person of extraordinary strength and resilience.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
The question of whether it’s better to go all-in on our strengths or work on improving areas of weakness is a complex one, and it often depends on the context and individual circumstances. However, based on my journey and experiences, I feel a balanced approach that leverages both my strengths and addresses areas of improvement has been instrumental in my success.
My determination and unwavering commitment to giving back are evident strengths that have played a pivotal role in my journey. By capitalizing on these strengths, I’ve not only overcome immense adversity but have also made a significant positive impact on my community and the lives of others. These strengths have allowed me to stand out as a leader and advocate.
While I’ve harnessed my strengths, I’ve also recognized the importance of education and skill development. I’ve pursued various educational programs, certificates, and training, which has likely helped me enhance my capabilities and become more effective in roles like an Executive Assistant, Government Affairs Director, and Plain Township Trustee. Addressing areas of weakness ensures that I’m well-rounded and better equipped to tackle diverse challenges.
My ability to adapt to changing circumstances and learn new skills demonstrates the value of a well-rounded approach. This adaptability has allowed me to transition from the military to various civilian roles, including leadership positions and community service, despite facing significant health challenges. It showcases that being versatile can open doors to new opportunities.
My deep empathy and compassion for others have not only enriched my personal life but also fueled my commitment to helping fellow veterans, victims of crime, and the community at large. These qualities, combined with my strengths, make me a more effective advocate and leader.
My dedication to ongoing learning and improvement is a key component of my success. It’s a testament to my understanding that personal growth is a lifelong journey, and investing in self-improvement helps me better serve others.
In summary, my life story illustrates the power of a balanced approach that harnesses my strengths while acknowledging and addressing areas of weakness. This balance has allowed me to navigate adversity, excel in diverse roles, and make a profound impact on my community. It’s a testament to the idea that personal and professional growth is an ongoing process, and both strengths and areas of improvement should be embraced to achieve one’s full potential.
