Meet Brooke Knight

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brooke Knight. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brooke below.

Hi Brooke, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

At the end of the day, I like to remind myself that I bring a unique perspective and skill set to my work. Sure, someone else could create the same product or write the same article with a different perspective, but it wouldn’t be the same product I create. I think overcoming imposter syndrome is all about knowing your worth, trusting your instincts, and not comparing yourself to other people. There is always an opportunity to learn from someone else and how they do something, but you should never diminish your process or creative thinking. When walking into the room with other successful people, I like to take the opportunity to learn something from someone else and give someone else encouragement (when appropriate). I also believe confidence goes a long way and looks good on everyone!

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’ve always been passionate about education and knew early on that teaching wouldn’t be the best fit for me. I had the idea to start a history magazine for kids and, a few months later, our company launched.

As the cofounder and editor-in-chief, I get to work with incredible educators, artists, writers, and professors in a variety of fields and am always learning something new. One of my biggest passions as a business owner is ensuring all our employees are thriving in their roles and enjoy working for the company. We hold ourselves to high standards, and our readers can see our passion and dedication to creating the best possible product for young minds to explore the past in a fun and exciting way.

We are in the processes of launching our 30th issue of Honest History Magazine, we have two podcasts, a book series, school curriculum, and are working on some very exciting new products.

We believe that every person can shape history and hope to encourage the next generation of young historians to go out and change the world today.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think the three essential qualities for success in business are knowing the “why” behind your business/brand, understanding your personal limits, and being fully aware of the sacrifice required to run a business in its early stages.

Knowing the “why” of your brand and sticking to it can be difficult, especially as the company grows. Early on, the Honest History team knew what our values were and were able to grow around those values. Our goal has always been quality over quantity and steady growth. By knowing the “why” behind these values, we’ve been able to outlast competitors and really thrive in the market. We’ve built trust with our readers and have established relationships and partnerships that prioritize quality above all else, and I think that is evident with all our products.

By understanding your personal limits, you can best allow your brand to grow. I knew I was the last person who should be running the business side of Honest History Co, even though the business was my idea. I knew my limitations and the areas where I knew I could contribute the most and found help to fill in the gaps. Build upon your strengths and ask for help in your weak points so you and your business can thrive.

Lastly, I cannot stress this enough, but try to fully understand the sacrifice required required by you (and your family) to start a business. We all know starting and running a business is hard, but understanding the true cost of success is vital in those early stages. Sleep will be lost, friend’s texts will go unanswered, and you may find your phone permanently strapped to your hand (even while on vacation). Having a support system in place that is there to cheer you on is an essential step when launching a brand or business. It truly takes a village to make your vision come to life, so make sure you and your village are prepped and ready for the challenges ahead.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Honest History wouldn’t be here today without the support of my incredible husband and business partner, David. From the beginning, David has encouraged and pushed me to sharpen my strengths and to evaluate my weaknesses to better help the company and become the best version of myself possible. I’m so grateful that we compliment one another and are able to tackle the areas in which we each excel. David also does an amazing job in pushing me in areas where I excel but don’t necessarily like doing. For example, going out and meeting people can be exhausting at times. David has always been my biggest supporter, pushing me to explore areas outside my comfort zone and to share my passion for history and education with others. I truly wouldn’t be who I am today without his love, support, and guidance.
