Meet Brooke Lucas

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brooke Lucas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brooke below.

Brooke, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever had any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?

I’ve overcome creative blocks by revisiting my older work to remind myself how much I’ve grown as an artist. Looking back helps me tap back into the excitement I felt when I first started and it gives me the push I need to keep going. I also watch films for inspiration—sometimes seeing how stories are told visually helps spark new ideas. When I’m experiencing creative blocks and struggling to pick up my camera, I take a break from pressure-filled shoots and just hang out with friends or family. I bring my digital camera along and capture whatever catches my eye—no pressure, just fun. Those relaxed moments usually help me fall back in love with creating, and that’s when the inspiration starts to flow again.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m a portrait photographer from North Carolina who loves taking ideas and transforming them into real, visual stories. I was gifted my first camera at the age of five, and while I stepped away from it for a few years, I found my way back to photography at 13. I launched Brooke’s Canon during my senior year of high school and have been growing it ever since.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three most important qualities that have shaped my journey are strong communication skills, versatility, and time management. Being personable and knowing how to connect with people has helped me build lasting relationships with clients. Versatility has allowed me to adapt to different styles, concepts, and environments. Time management is important when juggling shoots, editing, and running a business. For anyone early in their journey, my advice is to experiment as much as possible. Try different styles, take on new challenges, and say yes to opportunities—even if they scare you a little. The more you create, the more confident you become and that process can help you discover your unique style.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I’m looking to collaborate with other creatives who enjoy making expressive, storytelling portraiture and love bringing unique ideas to life through photography. If you’re passionate about visual storytelling and want to create something meaningful and creative, let’s connect! You can reach out to me on Instagram @brookescanon.
