Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brooke (Modderman) Schuba. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brooke, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
I like to think that I am a ‘cup half full’ kind of person, and I believe that the people around me would say the same. From a young age I have been taught, and have learned through experience, that you and your time here on earth become what you put your focus on. In regard to yourself, it is a proven fact that you inherit characteristics from the 5 people closest to you in life. In the same aspect, you tend to become and feel what you are putting your focus on. I choose to focus on the positives and “brighter side” of life. There are too many things in this world that try to drag us down, and have us live in this dark state of mind containing uncertainty and hardship. Enjoying the little things, and small moments, is my way of staying optimistic and focusing on the potential positive outcomes. This mindset has greatly influenced my business and has taken it to unexpected levels. By focusing on the positives when starting a business, you are able to look past some of the initial hurdles that come about when starting something in a new territory, and get past the stages that cause most people to quit.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the owner of Rewritten Rental! A decor rental business that I started back in the Fall of 2021. We offer many decor rental options from brass candlestick holders, eucalyptus garland, Edison bulb string lights, frames, mirrors, etc. Our most popular item has been our sets of boho area rugs. We have over 25 different boho area rugs in our inventory that customers rent for their weddings, showers, and parties!
Growing up, I was surrounded by entrepreneurs. Many family members owned their own business, but primarily in the real estate/development area. When I saw the opportunity to tap into a more artistic field, it caught my eye. This was something that I had never been around and I grew to love this freeing/creative growth atmosphere of business. One of the aspects that keeps me motivated is seeing all of the different ways that the same decor can be used. Each person has a story and that story is shown by how they present themselves and the things around them. It has been so eye opening and inspiring to see how someone’s personality and priorities are shown through the use of something as simple as decor.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Relationship Building – The rental world, especially in the wedding industry, is a lot of word of mouth. In order to be a successful wedding vendor, you will need good ratings and positive reviews. Building relationships with brides, and other vendors is essential.
Diligence – Small businesses are really hard to get started and maintain. They tend to require investments up front, and it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel (getting the business off of the ground). Having diligence to keep moving forward was crucial in starting Rewritten Rental!
Creativity – Since my business is run primarily through social media and word of mouth, creativity is needed! Finding clever ways to market your business with the resources at hand is super important. Some examples would be styled photoshoots, keeping up with social media posts, giveaways, deals on holidays, etc!
The best advice that I would have for someone starting their own business would be to find their motivation! It is easy to get burnt out when starting your own business. Find your reason why you want your business to succeed whether it be for some side income for family, traveling, etc, or simply to explore different passions. Find your reason and keep your focus on it!
Another piece of advice would be to find your accountability person. I recently got married to the love of my life, and he has been a constant supporter and encourager with my small business. You need that special person walking along side you in life and pushing you to be the best version of yourself which cultivates the best business owner!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always on the hunt to collaborate with other wedding vendors, future brides, or small business owners! There are numerous ways that we can mutually benefit each other. Some ways we have gone about this in the past is through styled photoshoots and photographers and other vendors use my decor for free in exchange for content and pictures. I have also partnered with housing complex’s, boutiques, calligraphy artists, makeup artists, venues, videographers, DJ’s, etc!
If you are in this category of business or think we could mutually benefit each other, I am always open to having a discussion. Rewritten Rental can be reached through their Instagram (@rewritten.rental) or Facebook Page (Rewritten Rental) or by email!
We would love to work with you and empower small businesses!
