We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bruce Cunningham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bruce below.
Hi Bruce, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from the fact that if I want anything to happen for me, I will have to make it happen myself. I have to create my own reality. Whatever I put my hand to, I have to complete it or I won’t respect myself.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a filmmaker and actor. I also write and direct my own movies. I love being both in front of the camera as well behind the camera.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say leadership training is a very valuable skill I learned. Leadership is important in filmmaking, especially, in grassroots indie filmmaking. You need to get people to buy into your vision, follow you and stick with you. Secondly, high knowledge of my craft enables me to jump out there and make my own movies. Last, having perseverance is a quality that helped me complete my projects because there were some major obstacles I had to overcome.
My advice, study your craft and get started. Part of the learning comes from actually doing the work and executing.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I go for a 45 minute walk with my playlist. I need it to be peaceful. Then, I need to listen to what has me overwhelmed, prioritize it and ultimately determine if it is really worth my time, energy and/or money. In essence, take a few steps back to get on solid ground to see clearly.
