We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bruce Uhuru. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bruce below.
Hi Bruce, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
It’s a skill that’s learned but also innate. Over the years I’ve come to understand that differences have little effect where common interests supersede. Success is realizing that the room is filled with opportunities rather than people that do not look like me, plus my mind understands that I’m not in a room filled with people, but that they are in a room with me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an artist that finds solace in the creative process of production. With that understanding of myself I want to be able to connect people with artworks and artist that might not have the recognition from art lovers. There are plenty of talented artists that produce works that are overlooked because they haven’t been placed in front of the right audience. They slip through the cracks because there’s a gap between them and the art collector that has no idea that these works exist, so I decided to bridge that gap with Overspray Collectives an online gallery that exhibits/displays unknown artworks.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would have to say never giving up on your purpose but learning from the setbacks and hardships because in those you will definitely find inspiration. Perfect your craft and take the time to admire it for yourself before introducing it to others because in that your appreciation will be established before anyone else’s opinion is implemented. Last but not less is no matter what keep producing and perfecting what it is that drives you forward and in the end the journey, with all of its ups and downs, is a blessing.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking to collaborate and team up with people/artist because networking is where the potential for success thrives. Artist that are motivated to get their works out there and in front of the person who would love to have a piece of your story in their collection reach out to me on the website provided. Lets discuss what we can do and come up with the best solution for what you would like to accomplish.
