We recently connected with Bruna Mejias and have shared our conversation below.
Bruna , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I believe success is a consequence of dedication and consistency. The way I’ve learned to be efficient is by understanding the needs of, not only the character I’m playing as a part of the work obviously , but also the needs of the people working around and with me, so that I can be of service to them as well and ultimately serve our vision for the project, finding solutions along the way and therefore moving towards the same goals. In my perspective being your authentic self can never be a bad thing, and if part of being who you are is looking different than everyone else around you, then use it because it’s gonna make you stand out right away, and later on by the way you express yourself. Let the real, internal you show people who you truly are, when communicating with them.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I love my journey as an actress, it’s a gift to be able to do it and to get to experience how it’s like to be this other person, to live in those circumstances for a while and to learn so much from the characters and through this whole process. It’s like I’m living many lives inside one, many perspectives bringing knowledge and different levels of consciousness. My favorite “type” of characters to play are the ones who are intense, wild and free, like being unapologetic themselves, the more authentic the better and also that have to go through a journey where they overcome a lot of obstacles and experience an immense personal growth in their life and as a human being. I’m very passionate about projects that help bring awareness to people regarding the main subject that’s talked about in the respective story, that bring a message or a reflection, but always in a positive way, in a way that brings hope to whoever is watching, some sort of inspiration and, maybe, even the right kind of comfort. That’s what I believe the world needs the most.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’d say the first step is to get to know yourself really well and stand up for who you are, don’t diminish yourself to fit someone else’s narrative but also don’t be inflexible to growth and change, because the process of self discovery is an endless one, and hopefully we are always changing and growing for the better. Once you know who you are, or at least have a pretty good idea of it, the rest will follow, the things you want to stand for and the things you are passionate about are gonna be naturally revealed to you.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
There are only two things I’ve always been 100% passionate about in my life and luckily for me they walk together. Those two things are the art of acting and the English language. When acting, many times ,obviously, you need to communicate through words of a specific language and that’s when english enters the pictures. I have the most fun when I’m acting in english specifically. But English is not the only language I speak, nor it’s my native one. When I was 13 years old my mom made me take English classes at a very good English course, specialized in American English. When she told me she had enrolled me in this English program I wasn’t so excited about it, I didn’t want to take the classes at first. The reason why I felt that way before actually even learning it was because in elementary school the way it was shown was very poorly and I couldn’t quite understand it in the way it was shown, so I created some sort of resistance about it. But my mom told me she knew that it would be very important for my future, she didn’t know yet how or why but she knew I had to learn it. And at that point in my life I had no idea that some years later, English and acting would be connected to me, but I believed what my mom said, I felt she was right about this even if I couldn’t see the reason yet. So I accepted it and all I need to say is that after the very first class I fell in love with the English language, I had a great start with amazing teachers that were so good and taught me very well, I could understand it, the words made sense to me and I was learning it as if I was a baby learning a language for the first time, the teachers didn’t use any other languages as reference to translate, to associate just by memorizing, but they would make us understand through the process of thinking and associating in other ways, like connecting the words to actions and creating mental images for exemple. It was fun and joyful and surprisingly it was very easy to me, it flowed effortlessly. And I owe this discovery and gift to my mom.
