We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bryan Billmire a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bryan, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose through learning the person who my addiction taught me I was versus the person I knew who I was were not the same person. Thru the lessons learned during my time at The Other Side Academy and beyond, even to this day being part of an amazing movement (The Other Side Village) I now know that my purpose reaches far beyond the person I thought I was up to 2019

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
professionally I am focused on bringing compassion and understanding to the table thru my lived experience as a homeless drug addict to team lead at the other side village.I am most excited to give hope to those who may have resigned to the thought that they are locked in the “box” of Homelessness or Addiction. I have been working side by side with some of the great minds behind the vision of The Other Side Academy and the Other Side Village to develop The Other Side Inn. We are planning a soft launch before the end the 2025 year

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1-keeping my mouth shut and eyes open.
2-patience with the process and with myself
3-Look for the lessons
I would say the advice would be to remember when you’re talking you’re not learning. Be kind to yourself you are re learning or just learning a new way of life it takes time and expect to fall, when you do look for the lesson and ignore the emotions they will lie to you during this process of learning

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
This question here rips my heart out and was one of the hardest lessons I hope to ever learn. I went to The Other Side Academy February 22, 2019 and a few days before my one year anniversary being at the Academy I learned my Father committed suicide. The Academy at that time was a two year program. I committed to stay for the full two years but when I found out about my father the first thing I wanted to do was to run. Run from my pain, my commitment and run to my family and pretend to be the hero to them that I wished had. After speaking with a mentor I decided to stay and complete my commitment. On February 22, 2020 I went to my father’s funeral. The last lesson my father taught me was to honor my commitments no matter how bad the pain is. The confidence learned through that lesson taught me I CAN DO HARD THINGS, I CAN SHOW UP FOR MY LOVED ONES.
