We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bryan Duffy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bryan below.
Bryan, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever had any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
I find that once I’m out of ideas, I simply take a break from writing. I don’t stress about it. It’s obvious to me that my brain needs a break from creating.
To get back into it, I start reading books, watch documentaries to see if there is anything that sparks.
If that doesn’t work, I sit down with a guitar and just start writing regardless of no creative mindset.
I’ll play some chords and write a simple chorus. Even if I don’t like it or it doesn’t make sense.
It’s my way of saying “ok brain, you’re back on the job whether you like it or not”
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a singer/guitarist/songwriter/entertainer based in Las Vegas Nevada.
I front the local band “Garage Boys”
We perform up to 300 dates per year all over the US.
Our genres range from 50s to the here and now. We mix our own music in every show which allows to get paid, and have the opportunity to play our own material for audiences.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1.) developed a wide range of musical knowledge from Classical, Blues, Folk, Country, Hard Rock. It made me a diverse musician
2.) developed a “thick skin” perseverance or stubborn attitude to adversity. There’s a lot in the music industry
3) people skills. I find it very easy to talk to people either on an individual basis or small to large audiences.
Learn your craft, and learn good communication skills. You can’t be good at one without the other
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I would spend it traveling and making music. Spending the time with my wife and dog, Bruno.
The same thing I’m doing now😀
