We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bryan Schmier. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bryan below.
Hi Bryan, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Honestly, I am still overcoming this on a day to day basis. In this industry you’re always looking for the next big thing. Even when you accomplish it, the next thought is “what’s next”. I think the best creatives tend to feel this way. We live in a world of social media that can lead to a lot of self-comparison, which is something I strive to stay away from. Instead I look at my peers’ work as a form of inspiration to get after my own work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I started my creative endeavors in college upon creating a streetwear clothing brand with a few friends. As that journey continued we realized just how important content is in promoting a brand. This led me to wanting to produce a short film that advertised our clothing in a unique way which sparked my interest in video production. This led to the inception of my current company, Strange Nature Productions, which I still operate to this day. We specialize in commercial and music video productions with an aspiration to develop and produce narrative films. Operating out of New York, I am constantly inspired by the ever-evolving culture that I am surrounded by.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three most important qualities that I feel impacted my journey are communication, confidence and persistence. No matter the industry you work in, the way you communicate will dictate the opportunities that you find yourself. You can be the most talented person in the room, but the one who communicates and works the hardest will always win.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Upon graduating college I was lucky enough to still live at my parents house while trying to build 2 companies. At that time I didn’t have a lot of money, but my parents support allowed me to keep overhead low and thus provided space to explore and build towards my passion. I attribute this to a lot of my early success.
