Meet Ca Humer

We were lucky to catch up with Ca Humer recently and have shared our conversation below.

CA, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

I have been blessed with a variety of talents. As a child I was terribly shy. My mother enrolled me in dance classes at three, hoping it would help me gain confidence. She would compliment me after a performance and tell me all the wonderful things people said about me. Then she’d turn to me as say, “but don’t let your head get too big.” Wow! How’s that for a punch to the gut? Direct hit to confidence and self-esteem. I believe as I grew up, this caused me to evaluate everything people said and analyze my own actions. I became a student of human nature, seeking a deeper understanding of others and myself.

I learned to manage encounters and outcomes to my advantage. Or at least I thought so at the time. But looking back on my younger years, I wonder if I managed them or managed how I responded to them? You see, if you can convince yourself, you didn’t want something to begin with, then even if you don’t get it or fail, you can survive.

If you can survive failure, then you will not fear failure. Except for working with electricity, because electricity will kill you; I have believed that with all things, ‘it can’t be that tough.’

Sometimes confidence is the ability to baffle the world (and ourselves) with bullshit.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Let me start out by saying that I’d love to connect with my readers; to learn what you think. You can check out my website or find me on Facebook, CAHumerauthor.

As a bit about me, I grew up in small town Wisconsin. Born into a family that valued the arts but had a firm foundation in practicality, they encouraged me to express myself in a variety of ways. Music, dance and performing were passions growing up, but I always felt a tug toward writing. Ever the pragmatist, I tamped down my creative side and chose business and sales–relegating my artistic inclinations to a side-line. When my creativity bubbled to the surface, I satisfied the urge to write by creating marketing campaigns, scripts and newsletter articles. Now retired, the book that percolated in my brain for decades has found its release, along with several others waiting to break free. Before, music and acting were my all-consuming passions. Now, I can’t stop imagining or writing.

With my debut novel, “Art from Darkness”, a suspense/romance about Sam & Kate, dealing with weapon smuggling across our southern border, I took the story that percolated for thirty years and sat down to write. I completed my first draft in 30 days. Wondering if I really had something, I handed it off to a friend who read the draft and told me I had a book. Imagine my surprise and excitement! Following on the heels of several rejections, I was the verge of self-publishing when The Wild Rose Press offered me a publishing contract.

Fans fell in love with Sam & Kate and asked what came next. Responding to their interest, I wrote the second in the series, “Artistic Deception”, where I delve into the evils of human trafficking and the sex trades. With book three in the works, Sam and Kate continue to thrill readers. Every woman wants a man like Sam and every man wants to be like Sam.

But the fun never stops. I have a thriller, “End of Pain”, with my publisher that promises to raise the hairs on the back of the readers’ necks.

I remember sending my first manuscript to the Library of Congress to copywrite. I sent it on my birthday. It was like being reborn. A new opportunity. My legacy. There is incredible power, learning that we possess the ability to reinvent ourselves. To become more than we might dare to dream.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three qualities? That’s tough to answer because there are so many. Perhaps number one is joy. What we feel inside and what others feel from us. It’s my drug of choice. In writing; a vivid imagination. The ability to enter into another reality. In life; a willingness to be open, to grow. The ability to observe without judgement. Lastly, perseverance. Don’t let the rejection notices get you down. Keep plugging away, keep learning, putting yourself out there. Don’t blame others. Be honest with yourself. Take risks. We have choices, each with their own level of risk. The worst thing is to never take the risks, whatever they are, to achieve your dream. You’ll never succeed if you don’t try.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Life is never perfect. And since it can be messy and we make not-so-smart decisions, we can be overwhelmed. I still lose sleep over things I did forty years ago. Heck, who am I kidding? Fifty-seven years ago to be precise. When I can’t find the solution inside, I turn to God. Many will scoff at this. So, to those that do scoff, just replace God with Budda or the cosmos, however you define the supreme being. There is wisdom ‘out there’. Energies and knowledge available if we open ourselves to hearing it. Those who believe in God will hear it as answers to their prayers. Those that believe in the cosmos will hear it from the universe. Whatever. Just listen.
