Meet Cadden McArthur

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cadden McArthur a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Cadden, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

When I first knew that I wanted to enter a creative field like acting/voice acting, I had no idea how to do it. A high school-aged Cadden was faced with a kind of analysis paralysis that comes with know what you want to do & what you’re inspired by, but feeling stuck in trying to find out HOW to do it.
For a while, this resulted iiin doing nothing at all.

So when I finally got to college & decided to study English & Theater, I was constantly comparing myself to the other actors & creatives in the theater & film department who HAD done high school theater & community theater or who HAD made short films with their friends. I would constantly compare myself to other people who – from the outside – seemed like they were miles & miles ahead of me.

Then one day, during an acting class, our professor, Dan Stearns, stopped me after an exercise & said that I seemed nervous. I said he was right & explained basically that constant comparison that I was making between myself & everyone else.
And Dan shared a little bit of perspective that I HAD heard before & HAVE heard since, but for some reason stuck with me this time around. He said “Everyone else in this department feels the same way.”

And he was right.
No matter what field you find yourself in, there will always be people who compare their successes & their failures to those around them. And that little bit of perspective had a big impact on how often I stop myself from doing what I want to do just because “someone else could do it better.”

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My usual day-to-days are spent continuing to chase my goal of being a full time voice actor.
Luckily for me, I get to balance that goal with my job at Atlanta Voiceover Studio with Mike Stoudt & Heidi Rew (also two great people & great actors) where we help other aspiring voice actors get started or tackle new, interesting areas of the industry. I can’t say enough good about my time at AVS & the amount I’ve learned about the industry from being immersed in it for the last few years.

And when I’m not at the studio, I’m finding opportunities for training with different VO coaches, auditioning for potential voiceover gigs, marketing to new potential clients or other VO rosters, & so on.
2025 has given me a lot to celebrate from new representation, my landing my first gigs in new genres of VO, getting waitlisted for some great clients, & so on.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

One skill that I’ve been latching onto more & more recently is discovering what tactics work for you. As you get your training in voiceover, you’ll hear tons & tons of different tips & perspective from coaches & other talents, but the trick is finding which ones work best for you!

Another all too important skill in VO is controlling your energy. Now this can DEFINITELY mean something along the lines of being able to heighten your energy when you need it for a character read or an excited commercial spot. But it can ALSO mean being able to bring it back down in a believable way for more laid-back or relatable reads.

And for a fun that I always like finding a chance to show off is creature sounds. Towards the end of 2024, I landed my first video game roll for a game where I got to perform with a bunch of monster voices. This ultimately turned into a 2-hour session full of growling, roaring, & grunting & it was a TON of fun. And it took me a while of pursuing VO to realize that it’s not as common of a skill as I thought!

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I’m always excited to work with new people!

New clients are always great to connect with & discuss how we can best bring their project to life.
And other creatives offer a similar kind of excitement when we can work together to practice the passions we all enjoy. One awesome thing about the creative scene nowadays is that creating your own pieces of media in animation, podcasts, online content, & so on is becoming more & more attainable. And it’s a great way to show off what you can do in a way that you have more individual control over.
