We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cain (odessa Da Gawd) Coleman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with cain (Odessa Da Gawd) below.
Cain (Odessa Da Gawd), so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding my purpose has been a journey marked by learning, growth, and self-discovery. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to the power of movement and expression. My passion for art, music, and dance led me to train with numerous schools, institutions, and companies, all in search of mastery and understanding of my craft. However, the deeper I immersed myself in these spaces, the more I realized that something fundamental was missing—kindness and queerness were either lacking or absent entirely.
Every institution or group I worked with seemed to focus so much on technical precision and professionalism that they often neglected the basic human values of compassion and acceptance. The environments I encountered could be rigid, competitive, and, at times, exclusionary. This was especially disheartening as a queer artist because, in many spaces, I felt that I had to hide or diminish parts of myself to fit in or be taken seriously.
This realization became a turning point for me. It wasn’t enough to just be excellent at my craft or to move through the industry with technical prowess. I knew I needed to prioritize the values that had been missing in these spaces. I made a promise to myself that wherever I went, I would always bring kindness, respect, and positivity. These qualities were not optional—they became my foundation. I recognized that creating a space where people felt safe, seen, and valued was just as important, if not more so, than achieving artistic perfection.
At the same time, I committed to embracing my full, authentic self, no matter where I was or who I was with. I vowed never to dim my light or hide my queerness to make others comfortable. For too long, I had internalized the belief that certain parts of me were “too much” or “not enough” for the spaces I wanted to inhabit. But through this process of reflection, I realized that my queerness is not a liability; it is a strength. It is what sets me apart and gives me a unique perspective in everything I do, whether it’s directing movement or collaborating on a creative project.
This combination of bringing kindness into every process and showing up as my full, unapologetic self has not only shaped my career but also given me a deeper sense of purpose. I’ve come to understand that my role is not just to create art but to help create environments where others can thrive as their authentic selves too. My work is about more than movement; it’s about liberation, visibility, and fostering spaces where everyone, regardless of their identity, can feel empowered to shine their brightest.
In embracing these principles, I’ve found that the work I do is richer, more fulfilling, and more aligned with who I am at my core. This approach has allowed me to build meaningful connections and bring out the best in the people I collaborate with. Ultimately, my purpose is not just to create beautiful art but to be a force of change, creating a world where kindness and queerness are not just present but celebrated in every space I inhabit.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m currently based in Brooklyn, New York, working as a freelance creator and performer. My goal is to establish myself as a choreographer and movement director in the film, fashion, and TV industries, while staying connected to my roots in the theatre. I aspire to choreograph for the world’s most renowned dance companies and iconic global brands.
Recently, I was honored to have a sold out run of my production “New Information” presented at The Shed here in NYC as well as releasing my first single as a solo recording artist. This year I also choreographed and performed in a film for Mugler, serving as both the choreographer and movement director. and I am currently in the early stages of creating a new work at The Ailey School, the home of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
This year is all about honing my skills and finding the best way to present them, allowing me to navigate the art world with confidence and creative freedom.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me, patience, discipline, and resilience are three core principles that guide me in achieving my dreams and goals. Patience allows me to trust the process, understanding that success doesn’t happen overnight. Discipline keeps me focused and consistent, ensuring that I put in the necessary work even when the road is tough. Resilience helps me bounce back from setbacks, reminding me that challenges are part of growth.
The journey toward success is bound to be long and difficult, but with these three qualities, you not only endure — you come out stronger and on top.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m currently seeking more opportunities in the film, TV, and fashion industry, I’m eager to collaborate with brands, networks, and directors to bring their visions to life. My next steps are focused on expanding into these spaces and forging meaningful creative partnerships.
I pride myself on being highly adaptable, and I’m excited about the possibility of choreographing and directing everything from Broadway productions to film projects. I’m always looking for ways to not only extend my own reach but also to elevate my clients’ visions through innovative movement and direction.
