We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Caitlin Jane Gordon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Caitlin Jane, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I built my confidence and self-esteem by consistently keeping the promises I make to myself. Whether big or small, these commitments help me show up for myself and strengthen my inner self-trust. Each time I follow through, I reinforce the belief that I’m capable of achieving anything I dedicate my energy to.
I truly believe that we are shaped by our habits, and over time, those habits define who we are. By nurturing positive routines and staying true to my intentions, I continue to grow into the best version of myself.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hi, I’m Caitlin Jane Gordon, a professional makeup artist based in Los Angeles and Orange County.
My journey to becoming a makeup artist wasn’t straightforward—it was born out of moments of struggle and self-discovery. In college, I felt lost, unsure of who I was or what I truly wanted. I spent so much time listening to what others thought was best for me that I ignored my own inner voice. That disconnect left me feeling empty, like I was living a life that wasn’t mine.
During those difficult times, makeup became my safe space. It was the one thing that allowed me to slow down, connect with myself, and feel a spark of joy. Sitting in front of a mirror, experimenting with colors and techniques, I found confidence I didn’t know I had. Makeup wasn’t just about looking good—it was about rediscovering my strength and creativity.
When I started sharing my looks on Instagram, the support I received from others was overwhelming. It was a reminder that my passion resonated beyond myself. Watching other makeup artists create beautiful work and build their careers inspired me to dream bigger.
One day, I decided to do my coworker’s makeup just for fun. It was the first time I’d ever done makeup on someone else, and I approached it differently than how she usually did it on her own. When I handed her the mirror, her reaction was priceless—she couldn’t believe how beautiful she looked. That moment was life-changing for me. Seeing her light up was one of the most fulfilling feelings I’d ever experienced, and I knew I’d found my purpose.
That same week, I enrolled in online courses to become certified. One year later, I’m proud to call myself a professional makeup artist. My mission is to ensure every client who sits in my chair feels the most beautiful they’ve ever felt. I truly believe that when you look good, you feel good, and that energy empowers you to do good.
I’m deeply grateful for the ability to use my skills and techniques to bring out the best in others and to show them the incredible confidence that lies within.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I firmly believe that without the support and love I’ve received, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Even during moments when it felt like no one was cheering me on, I knew I had to step up and believe in myself and my dreams. If I don’t value myself and my worth, how can I expect anyone else to?
One quote that has deeply resonated with me is: “Instead of looking for outside resources to fill your cup, fill your own cup. Pour into yourself whatever you feel is missing.” This mindset has stayed with me and shaped my journey.
As an artist, it’s challenging not to compare yourself to others, especially when social media constantly showcases everyone’s highlights. Over time, I’ve learned to shift my focus inward, comparing myself only to my past self and celebrating every win—big or small (especially the small ones).
I also discovered a love for podcasts about self-development and entrepreneurship, which became a source of motivation and growth. Shows like The Ed Mylett Show have been instrumental in helping me reshape my beliefs and invest in my personal growth.
Now, instead of comparing myself to other artists, I view their work as inspiration and genuinely appreciate their contributions to the world. Their success reminds me that it’s possible—it’s evidence that dreams can become reality.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
As someone who has struggled with feeling overwhelmed and stressed, I’ve cultivated daily rituals that help bring calm and clarity to my mind. Every morning, I begin my day with a 30-minute walk with my dog. Even before I had my pup, daily walks were my way of grounding myself. During these moments, I focus on being present—taking in the scenery, listening to the birds chirping, noticing my breath, and appreciating the beauty that surrounds me. This simple practice always leaves me feeling more centered and at ease.
For the past two years, I’ve also made journaling a part of my morning routine. I start with a mind-dump, writing down everything on my mind as a way to release and let go of anything that no longer serves me. This act of clearing my mental space helps me feel lighter as I move into the day. Next, I write about everything I’m grateful for, from the smallest joys to the bigger blessings. This practice shifts my energy, allowing me to start the day with a full heart and a higher vibrational frequency.
Finally, I set my intentions for the day, writing down what I want to focus on or achieve. These intentions stay with me, subtly guiding my thoughts and actions as I go about my day. These rituals have become a vital part of my routine, providing me with the peace and focus I need to navigate life with purpose.
