We recently connected with Caitlin Labistour and have shared our conversation below.
Caitlin, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I’ve always been one to adapt to whatever environment that I am in without having to change who I am. Being in rooms with people that don’t look like me gave me the drive to keep going because it allows me to show other people that do look like me that anything is possible.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am originally from Wentworth in Durban, South Africa. So , I take the term “Africa to the world” seriously ! Coming from where I do opportunities are very limited which means that you’re gonna do whatever it takes to make your dreams come true. I work as a caregiver but I wanna get deeper into the medical field all while pursing my dreams of being a content creator/influencer. My videos are basically my digital diary more than anything because one day all that we will have are memories. So , what better way to do that than to inspire those around you.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Making sure that I allow God to guide my footsteps , being consistent and never letting a “no” deter me from accomplishing my goals and aspirations! Anything is possible when you stick to it. Yes failure isn’t anyone’s first choice but how do you expect to learn if you don’t have a few bumps in the road ?
My family is always in my corner and they are my biggest supporters. No matter how crazy my dreams my seem they always stuck beside me.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Learning from both mistakes and achievements have kept me going. Not allowing myself to be distracted or demotivated by being turned down. It’s okay not to be everywhere all the time. The people that are meant to see your value will but you also have to keep the bar high in order for you to get what you want. Closed mouths don’t get fed and not every opportunity needs to be taken !
