Meet Caitlyn Resch

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Caitlyn Resch. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Caitlyn , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

The biggest thing I’ve found when I roll into a room is that I’m counted out before I even fully roll in. For some reason, disability as seen as a pariah in society. However, when I open my mouth to speak and am full of sunshine and kindness, people begin to soften. I think the best way to change anyone’s idea is to be kind and honest. When people ask me why I need my wheelchair, I use it as a chance to educate them about ambulatory wheelchair use and users. When someone asks me about my conditions, I use it as a chance to educate them about my disabilities. There is always something. you can learn from everyone that you meet. The more I am seen, the more it becomes normal, the more disabled come out into the limelight. When you roll into the room and clap for everyone, you create an atmosphere of warmth and confidence. THAT is how I make a successful, effective impression on anyone or anything I come into contact with. Leaving a ripple is the way to elevate.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a professional runway model, actress, and creator. I’m sure you know what the first two are. But let’s delve into what I mean by creator. Not only do I create content for Instagram/Tiktok/Facebook, I am also a graphic designer and own a small shop. I make jewelry, resin accessories, t shirts, bags, cosmetic bags, and even giant wings. I have always been creative and an artist but it had the chance to grow after I got sick. Not being able to work a traditional job due to my disability, I delved into creating. Creating makes my heart feel great. As far as graphic design goes, I designed magazines, stationary, logos, and more! You can find my stuff under “Bubblegum Creations” on most platforms.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My journey began with paralysis which is something I never thought I’d have to fight through. I think my medical background (I was a Veterinary Tech studying to be a Veterinarian) really helped me out when I did become ill. Having that knowledge base helped me fight for myself to get a diagnosis. With that knowledge, even though it took me SIX neurologists, I was able to help my current team diagnosis and treat both of my conditions. I don’t think I would have made it this far without that.
Another quality I believe has helped me in my journey is my ability to look at everything with joy. Even if I’m on the ground having a seizure, I’m supported and that means I will be alright once I come out of the episode. So many times we only focus on the negativity of a situation. There is ALWAYS a reason to smile, even if it is small. I search for those reasons and I focus on them to get me through.
The advice I would give others is to place a journal by your bedside. Before you sleep, write down THREE things that made you smile that day. When you’re having a weak day, look at that journal.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

The Geode Theory by Teri Hofford really changed the way I talk to myself and treat myself. The book is about self image and the idea is that you “chip away” to the geode. This involves a lot of emotional work and a lot of dedication. It took me QUITE a long time to go through the book. I kept a journal alongside it and there were times tears stained the page because this book really dives DEEP into how you treat and talk to yourself. I realized that I was really bringing myself down before I even gave myself the chance to try. YOU are always listening. If you are saying detrimental and negative things about YOURSELF, you’re more inclined to believe someone else’s view of you. The only view that matters is YOURS.
