We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Caitlyn Ryherd . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Caitlyn below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Caitlyn with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Since Alex and I (Caitlyn) were 8 years old we have shown and raised beef cattle. Starting this at such a young age caused us to take on a lot of responsibilities and step up with all of our barn chores. This has helped us to have such a good work ethic. Growing up in the barn has show us how much the animals rely on us and if we don’t get our jobs done then the animals will suffer. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to grow up in a barn and gain such a good work ethic. It has come with a lot of great lessons and helped us to start our own business and strive to do as much as possible with the business and share our love for animals with others!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I started the business when I was 16 with my twin sister Alex and my mom Jessica. We wanted to share the love we have for agriculture with kids of all ages! My main goal with the business is to teach people about agriculture and the ag industry. Agriculture has been such a big part of my life and I have loved all of the experiences I have had in the industry. I love having summer camps and day camps at the farm for kiddos because they get to be so hands on with the farm work and they get to learn so much about taking care of animals and how much work really goes into the farm while also have fun at camp!
My job title is Marketing and Communication Manager so I mainly post on social media, I do all of our invoicing and I book all of our events. I also come to the barn twice a day to take care of the animals and I go out to events and work them. Between Alex and I we both help each other with our job roles but we have our specific areas that we focus on. I have really enjoyed being in charge of communication because I get to see the event from start to finish I send the first email and the last after the event and I get to attend the event and see everyone have so much fun with the critters! We have so many different events always going on and we are always booking new events, the best way to see what we are doing and what events we are going to is by following us on Facebook and keeping up with all of our posts of events.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Somethings that I think are important and helped me is dedication because your business is going to start out slow and you are going to lose motivation but you have to keep going and keep promoting your business. Another is loving what you do. If you do not love your business and you don’t enjoy what you do, then it isn’t going to go far. You have to pour everything you have into your business and show how much it really means to you. Lastly is gratitude, be grateful for all of your supporters and show it. Be grateful for anyone who critiques you and tries to help you out. Any help is good help and any event is a good event, be grateful for the small events and the big ones.
You have to keep going no matter what. If you are feeling defeated take a day and then get back to work the next day. The only way to get better is to keep trying. My biggest piece of advice is to never give up!
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents have always pushed me to do my absolute best. Since a young age I have had chores to do at home from dishes to laundry to mowing the lawn. I have always had to work for what I want if I want something I have to work for it so I can buy it. This has impacted me to want to start my own business. I like getting to make my own decisions and if I want to do something differently then I have to work for it. Having my partner Alex also helps to split up responsibilities, chores and help make decisions together. I am so grateful that my parents have pushed us to start our own business and have helped us to gain such a good work ethic. Without them pushing us and giving us responsibilities at such a young age we would not be the successful business owners we are today!
