Meet Calie Lewis

We recently connected with Calie Lewis and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Calie, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?

My self discipline for my exercise routine came from a promise I made to myself, August 5, 2011.  That is the day I had bariatric surgery and decided to make a permanent change to live a healthier lifestyle.  I knew going into the surgery the only way it was going to be successful was through changing my lifestyle completely and that would include regular exercise.
First I set clear goals.  Without a clear specific target, my efforts would be scattered and unfocused.  The food part was pretty much taken care of.  Bariatric surgery has very clear limitations around food.  Now the exercise part.  I had an elliptical so first I started with a commitment to daily cardio.  No taking days off.  I knew from my past efforts 1 day turns into 10 and snowballs from there.
With my goals in hand, I started to implement this part of my journey.  The hard part was the when.  I had a full time job, small child, a side gig and all the things we have going on in our mid to late thirties.  I quickly found that I needed to get it done first thing in the morning.  I set the alarm for 4:00am and had to be on the elliptical by 4:30.  Extreme, I know, but if I did not get it done first thing in the morning, it would not happen at all.  The first few weeks were the worst, but before I knew it, I had a new habit.  It was not always easy, the first minute was always the worst.  I would negotiate with myself.  I would say to myself I could get off in 10 minutes, then 10 more.  Before I knew it, 30 minutes was done.
It is an ongoing journey.  I’ve come to understand that discipline is a skill that can be honed through consistent effort and willingness to push beyond comfort zones.  Through this journey, I’ve transformed from someone who struggled with exercise to someone who embraces it.  I embraced it so much I am now teaching Pilates full time and loving every minute of it.
A good habit or self discipline, comes from setting clear and attainable goals.  Create a plan and find a way to be accountable.  I tell my clients to give yourself the same grace you would give to your child or your best friend.  It is a process and a commitment.  With anything there will be good and not so good days, but give yourself credit for trying and showing up.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a Classical Pilates teacher, I have a home studio based in Monroe, Michigan.

My philosophy is rooted in understanding. I know what it’s like to juggle family, work, and everything in between. That’s why my Pilates sessions aren’t just about exercise; they’re a sanctuary where you can release stress, embrace self-care, and reconnect with your inner strength.

I offer private and semi-private sessions. I tailor Pilates session exclusively for my clients needs. In every session, we’ll work on increasing flexibility, building lean muscle, and boosting that all-important core strength.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I am good with people. I understand what it is like to not be in a “movers” body. Meaning I was never athletic, but I had a huge desire to be one. I understand what if feels like to not be living in the body I desire.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
There are actually two people. The first is my husband Jim. He is always there to prop me up when I need it. He has had absolute faith in me when I am doubting myself. He has been supportive of my journey in a way that is absolutely indescribable. He is my rock.

The second is my teacher Brenda Freeman. I knew from the first private session I took with her she was who I needed. She is always encouraging. She keeps me grounded and has taught me to trust my instincts and continues to guide me through this world of Pilates.
