We recently connected with Callie Lawrence and have shared our conversation below.
Callie, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Creativity is the most pure form of self expression in my opinion. When you really look at a creative’s work, you can really unpack who they are in the small details that make their work original. For me, I am always expressing myself through my love of nature and animals. When I’m feeling stuck, the best way for me to get over the hump is to plan a day trip to explore with my dog, Hank and my camera. Sometimes I bring a hammock and a picnic and listen to a podcast in the trees, sometimes we catch a sunrise on the beach of one of our Great Lakes, sometimes we find somewhere to for a long hike. Hank is my greatest subject to photograph, alongside my horse, Molly. I love taking photos of them and experimenting with new editing techniques just for fun. It really helps creativity flow through me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m Callie from Callie Alexandria Photography, a woman owned small photography business based in southeast Michigan. As an adventure elopement, equine and pet photographer, I love connecting myself and my work to mother nature. Whether I’m working with couples or horses or pets, I love to get to know my clients to find out what inspires them and then incorporate that into our sessions together. For instance, if someone is eloping in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan specifically because they have fond memories of a loved one on the shores of Lake Superior, I make SURE to really focus on capturing the feeling and emotion the lake gives off on their big day. I consider my editing style earthy and cinematic, sometimes a bit moody depending on the vibe of the session. I’m super stoked to have rebranded late last year and to really lean into what sets my soul on fire: adventure elopements. This journey is such an honor and I’m so excited to travel around the country with my couples to capture the story of their love.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think one of the hardest but most important quality to have as a photographer is confidence. I reeeeaally struggled with this my first year or two of my photography journey. But confidence is what helps potential clients TRUST you and your vision. If you want to try something different, jump in feet first and just do it! Another really important quality to have is empathy. Since I was a young girl, I’ve always been an empath, so this one wasn’t too hard for me to pick up on. Empathy is important because people want to feel seen and heard, especially by someone who is capturing their life. Lastly, I think it’s important to constantly be open to learning. I love attending styled shoots and educational courses to keep improving my skill set. I’ve met some of my best friends by attending these content days and bouncing ideas off of one another. MAKE FRIENDS!! It will get you through the rough patches.

How would you describe your ideal client?
This is such an important question to ask! Everyone has different styles of photography that it’s so important for clients to figure out what they like and find someone who does just that.
My ideal client is someone who LOVES nature and being outdoors. They likely frequently go hiking and camping, maybe with their dogs. Being an advocate for national parks, I strongly connect with clients who also do what they can to support our public lands. My ideal client would likely want to plan some sort of outdoor activity as the heart of their session with me. This could be a hike, kayaking, a picnic, horseback riding, the list could go on forever! Basically, let’s adventure together.
