Meet Callum

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Callum a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Callum, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Although I’m only 17 years old I think it’s fair to say that I’ve been through a lot in my life. Some experiences have been very good and some have been very bad and traumatizing. Being that I have been consistently going through life-altering experiences since I was young I think my ability to process drastic changes and events has been sharpened which also trickles down to when I have to deal with day to day issues or minuscule problems. Some major events I’ve dealt with include being adopted, survivors guilt, and toxic relationships and the residual mental space these obstacles have left me. I like to feel like I have a good grasp on these personal issues but I know it is a continuous process that I have to consistently work at which makes me grateful for my family, team, and supporters that show up for me and pour love into my life. That love is truly what keeps me going and empowers me on my journey.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a Singer & Songwriter from The Eastern Shore of MD. I write, record and perform original music all over the United States. My sound is rooted in Alternative Indie/Pop, with undertones of Jazz and Folk. This past February 2nd I released my debut EP ‘You Know Who’ and I’ve been on tour these past few months up and down the East Coast featuring shows at The Bitter End, Gamble Rogers Folk Festival along with a stop in Texas for SXSW. This EP has changed my life and I’m currently working on my next releases while touring.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’ll give you one of each, skill-wise I would say that my Musical Skills are most important as a Vocalist and Musician (Guitar & Piano). Quality-wise I would say my Maturity would be my most valuable quality, I’ve been through a lot in my young life but I’ve been able to handle things as they come with grace. Most impactful Area of Knowledge of mine would be Communication, I believe communication is an underrated practice that people don’t really pay to much attention to. For me it is one of the most important things to me because it allows me to express myself effectively in music and life.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
The current challenge I am faced with is growth. People may think how is growing a problem but I tend to focus on the big picture because I’ve seen how growth can drastically affect Artists, not everyone handles it well and I want to be sure that I do. I want to grow sustainably, not just be popular for 5 minutes and disappear, once I get my foot in door, don’t expect me to see me going anywhere.
